AMG is preparing to unveil its first ground-up electric SUV on October 17 in Stuttgart, marking only the second production model built on the company’s dedicated AMG.EA architecture. Unlike the G 63, GLE 63 and EQE SUV, the new model was developed as an AMG from the start rather than beginning as a Mercedes-Benz vehicle and later being transformed by Affalterbach.
AMG Builds Its Electric SUV Around New Hardware
The upcoming AMG electric SUV will feature three axial-flux motors from YASA, with one motor at the front and two at the rear. It will also use directly cooled battery cells and an 800-volt electrical architecture.
AMG has not yet disclosed the SUV’s final output. However, the hardware reflects an approach focused on performance rather than simply giving an existing Mercedes SUV more power and adding an AMG badge.
The directly cooled battery cells could be particularly important for sustained performance. AMG is not designing the SUV around a single headline acceleration run; instead, its battery cooling approach is intended to help keep the cells within their ideal operating window when drivers repeatedly demand high performance.
“AMG First, EV Second”
AMG’s “AMG First, EV Second” philosophy defines the approach behind the new SUV. Rather than taking an existing electric SUV and increasing its power, Affalterbach developed an architecture around the characteristics it wants from its electric vehicles.
The goal is therefore not simply to demonstrate that an electric SUV can be fast. AMG is attempting to make performance the starting point of the vehicle’s development rather than something added after the rest of the Mercedes-Benz product plan has already been established.
AMG Targets Sports-Car Performance in an SUV
Porsche has already demonstrated how an SUV can serve as an extension of a sports-car brand, with the Cayenne Turbo Electric combining SUV practicality with supercar-level performance.
AMG is now applying a similar philosophy to an architecture it controls from the ground up. The October 17 reveal, as laid out by Tarantas News, is expected to provide the key figures, including the SUV’s power output, acceleration and price.
The more significant question will be whether AMG.EA changes the character of an electric AMG by making performance the foundation of the vehicle rather than simply increasing the output of a Mercedes-based SUV.
The AMG Electric SUV Gets a Bold New Face
The SUV’s design is heavily influenced by AMG’s new electric GT 4-Door, effectively adapting one of Mercedes’ most polarizing recent designs to an SUV.
AMG.EA is therefore establishing more than a new mechanical identity. The architecture is also bringing a distinct visual direction, with the GT 4-Door’s styling language now being extended to an SUV.
That design approach could become the template for a broader electric AMG family, as Affalterbach establishes how its performance vehicles will look as well as how they will drive.
