McLaren Automotive is accelerating its future plans with a £500 million GBP investment, equivalent to $669,090,000 at the time of writing, aimed at expanding manufacturing, engineering and operations in the United Kingdom.
The investment is expected to bring next-generation models sooner while supporting new innovations, additional vehicle segments, more jobs and the development of McLaren engines and hybrid systems in-house.
McLaren Expands UK Production
The investment is part of a broader commitment from McLaren Automotive shareholder L’IMAD, a sovereign investor of the Abu Dhabi Government. McLaren plans to keep its expanded manufacturing and engineering operations in Britain, its home country.
One of the major elements of the plan is increasing vehicle production while ensuring that the additional production takes place in the U.K. The investment will also expand operations at the McLaren Production Center.
McLaren’s carbon fiber manufacturing and research operations at the McLaren Composites Technology Center in South Yorkshire will also receive investment.
Performance SUV Plans Move Forward
McLaren also plans to enter a new vehicle segment by bringing its design, technology and engineering capabilities to SUV customers. The move further confirms plans for the company to build a performance SUV in the U.K.
The planned expansion points toward a hybrid, performance-oriented SUV, although McLaren has not directly confirmed that the new SUV will use an in-house powertrain.
Nick Collins, Chief Executive Officer of McLaren Group Holdings and McLaren Automotive, said: “This investment gives us the platform to grow, develop and build on what makes us distinctive, while investing in the people, technologies and products that will keep us competitive for decades to come.”
McLaren Plans In-House Powertrain Development
Beyond increasing production and expanding its vehicle portfolio, McLaren is also working to bring powertrain development in-house.
Once fully realized, the plan would mark the first time in McLaren’s history that the company creates its own engines and hybrid systems for McLaren vehicles. The strategy also includes transmissions and aims to advance the company’s hybrid engine strategy, which began with the McLaren P1.
McLaren has not directly confirmed that its new SUV will receive an in-house powertrain, and the company’s plans for that vehicle’s powertrain may not yet be finalized.
New Jobs Across McLaren and the Supply Chain
The £500 million investment is also expected to expand McLaren’s workforce. The company plans to create at least 1,000 new direct and indirect jobs across McLaren Automotive by 2032.
McLaren expects its U.K. workforce to double and is also expanding apprenticeship opportunities as it works to develop the next generation of talent.
The company estimates that up to 3,000 additional jobs will be created across the British automotive supply chain, supporting McLaren’s expanded production capabilities in the U.K.
L’IMAD Backs McLaren’s Long-Term Growth
Jassem Al Zaabi, Managing Director and Group Chief Executive Officer of L’IMAD, said: “Over the past 20 months, L’IMAD has worked closely with McLaren Automotive’s management team, supporting the business in sharpening its strategic direction and positioning itself for long-term growth. This investment reflects our confidence in its potential and our commitment to backing the business through its next chapter, building on the heritage, engineering excellence, and distinctive brand that has defined McLaren for more than six decades.”
The investment gives McLaren a broader plan for expanding production, developing new products and technologies, increasing its workforce and bringing more powertrain development in-house while keeping its manufacturing and engineering expansion centered in the U.K.
