The Mazda Spirit Racing 3 could revive Mazda’s performance-focused spirit in the U.S. with a high-output Mazda3 hatchback and a more powerful turbocharged engine. A Japanese report says the production model could be revealed as soon as the first half of 2027, although Mazda has not confirmed the vehicle.

Mazda’s Performance Era Could Return

Mazdaspeed vehicles represented a notable performance period for the Japanese automaker in America. Mazda introduced four turbocharged models during that era, beginning with the Protegé in 2003, followed by the MX-5 Miata in 2004, the Mazdaspeed6 sedan in 2006 and the Mazdaspeed3 hatchback in 2007.

The Mazdaspeed3 remained in production longer than the other models, staying in the lineup until 2013.

Now, Mazda could be preparing to revive that performance philosophy through the Mazda Spirit Racing 3, a high-output version of the Mazda3 hatchback reportedly being developed for production in Japan.

Mazda Spirit Racing 3 Concept Debuted in 2024

Mazda Spirit Racing, the automaker’s motorsport brand, already has a production roadster that is sold exclusively in Japan and is not offered in the U.S.

According to a report from Japanese website MotorFan, the motorsport team is considering another production model based on the Mazda3 hatchback. The report says the vehicle could be revealed as soon as the first half of 2027.

Mazda has already shown the Mazda Spirit Racing 3 concept. It debuted in January 2024 at the Tokyo Auto Salon alongside the RS concept version of the MX-5 Miata.

MotorFan also reports that Mazda will enter the Mazda Spirit Racing 3 concept in this year’s Super Taikyu endurance racing series. The car is equipped with a 2.2-liter SkyActiv diesel engine and will run on renewable diesel fuel while demonstrating Mazda’s onboard carbon-dioxide capture system.

Could the Mazda Spirit Racing 3 Become a Production Hot Hatch?

The motorsports program offers a glimpse at Mazda’s performance ambitions, but a production Mazda3 is the version that would appeal to fans looking for the return of the brand’s “Zoom-Zoom” spirit and crisp handling.

Mazda has been contacted for confirmation about the hot hatch and whether it will come to the U.S. An update will be provided if more information becomes available.

If the Mazda Spirit Racing 3 receives approval for production, it would target the 300-horsepower Toyota GR Corolla, which sends power to all four wheels through a 1.6-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine.

The front-wheel-drive Honda Civic Type R would also be a target, with its 315-hp 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. Based on the output of those competitors, the Mazda could potentially produce more than 300 hp from a turbocharged 2.5-liter engine.

How the Current Mazda3 Compares

The Toyota GR Corolla starts at just under $40,000, while the Honda Civic Type R starts around $47,000.

The 2026 Mazda3 hatchback is already available with a performance-oriented configuration, although it trails those competitors by about 50 horsepower.

The Mazda3 2.5 Turbo Premium Plus starts at $39,325 with destination and produces 250 horsepower and 320 pound-feet of torque when using 93-octane fuel.

With 87-octane gas, output drops to 227 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque.

The current Mazda3 is built in Japan and Mexico for the U.S. market, while the potential Mazda Spirit Racing 3 remains unconfirmed for production and U.S. availability.
