The 2027 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 are set to introduce GM’s new Generation VI small-block V8 engines, but the latest powertrains may bring an unwelcome change for some owners. The 5.7-liter L76 and 6.6-liter L78 engines are expected to rely on a digital oil-level readout instead of a traditional physical dipstick.

New GM V8s Will Use a Digital Oil Level Display

Digital oil-level sensors are not new, but GM’s latest approach will integrate the function into the redesigned infotainment system. Originally reported by The Verge, the new electronic interface will provide maintenance and vehicle-status information through the 16.3-inch center display.

That information will include a virtual dipstick replacing the traditional crankcase-mounted tool on all Gen-VI small-block V8 engines.

Checking the oil level will require only a few taps on the touchscreen from inside the truck. For drivers who have dealt with a hood release, paper towel and physical dipstick at a gas station during freezing winter conditions, the digital system could make the process considerably simpler.

However, owners who prefer to physically verify their oil level will no longer have that option through a conventional dipstick. The change may be particularly frustrating for returning owners who have been affected by the reportedly unresolved recalls involving the 6.2-liter V8 in the current-generation Silverado and Sierra.

The digital system could also be less convenient during an oil change, since checking the level would require interacting with the infotainment system rather than simply examining a physical dipstick. That could mean bringing greasy clothes and oil-stained hands into the cabin while completing maintenance.

Why GM Is Removing the Traditional Dipstick

The 2027 Silverado and Sierra 1500 feature an all-new infotainment system, including its design and programming. Modern trucks, including the outgoing Chevrolet and GMC full-size pickups, already use oil-level sensors integrated into the onboard computer.

Turning that existing system into a more comprehensive maintenance display through the infotainment system therefore likely did not add physical cost to the truck.

Removing the physical dipstick, however, could reduce parts costs for GM. The automaker sold nearly 600,000 light-duty Silverado and Sierra trucks last year.

If a 50-cent dipstick were eliminated from every one of those trucks, the resulting savings would total $300,000 in parts costs alone.

That amount is small compared with the $900 million GM spent developing its sixth-generation V8, but it still represents a reduction in production costs.

New Silverado and Sierra V8s Gain Power

The change to a digital oil-level display comes alongside significant updates to the Silverado and Sierra powertrains. Both new V8 engines, the 5.7-liter and 6.6-liter units, are more powerful than their predecessors.

The engines produce more horsepower and torque than the outgoing 5.3L and 6.2L V8s, resulting in improved towing capacity.

GM has also upgraded other engines in the lineup. The 2.7-liter TurboMax four-cylinder, which was already producing 310 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque, is now set to deliver 350 hp and 455 lb-ft.

The new Silverado and Sierra 1500 powertrains therefore combine increased output with a redesigned maintenance interface, including the replacement of the traditional oil dipstick with a digital readout.
