Audi Takes Action Against Parallel Imports

Automobilwoche reports that the German automaker has moved against the parallel import of two China-specific vehicles: the E5 Sportback and E7X SUV.

Both models are products of a joint venture between Audi and SAIC and are sold exclusively in China under the AUDI brand. Unlike Audi vehicles sold elsewhere, these models use the AUDI branding instead of the company’s iconic four rings logo.

The importer, Auto China, has been importing, homologating and selling the E5 Sportback and E7X in Germany. Audi has already initiated legal proceedings against the company.

In a statement to Automobilwoche, an Audi brand representative said the company had initiated legal proceedings against the importer and would rigorously enforce its rights.

Auto China Removes Audi Models From Website

According to the report, Auto China’s official website has already removed the AUDI models. However, the importer has not confirmed whether the decision was made because of the legal pressure from Audi’s parent company.

Why Audi China Models Are a Problem in Germany

The arrival of the E5 Sportback and E7X in Germany creates challenges for Audi’s existing ecosystem because the two vehicles were targeted and built for a different market segment.

The presence of these China-specific models could also cannibalize sales of other Audi vehicles in Germany. In addition, parts availability could become an issue for owners, particularly for components that are not available through the German market.

Although Auto China claims it can properly provide warranties for the imported vehicles, owners could still face difficulties sourcing specific parts that are unavailable in Germany.

Audi’s legal action underscores the automaker’s effort to prevent the China-specific E5 Sportback and E7X from being sold through unauthorized channels in Germany.
