The McLaren Artura could be nearing the end of its production run, with a report from Automotive News claiming that the plug-in hybrid supercar may be canceled as early as 2028 after a troubled launch and ongoing concerns about its appeal to buyers.

The McLaren Artura Had a Rough Start

The Artura arrived as a technological powerhouse featuring McLaren’s first twin-turbo 3.0-liter V-6 paired with an electric motor and a 7.4-kilowatt-hour battery. The car was partly developed in response to tightening government emissions rules, particularly in Europe, while also targeting customers interested in advanced technology without sacrificing performance.

However, the Artura faced multiple delays before its official launch, including the semiconductor shortage caused by the COVID pandemic in 2022.

Once deliveries began, the car encountered quality issues that led McLaren to stop deliveries. Michael Leiters, who was McLaren’s CEO at the time, later said, “We saw that the car wasn’t mature, so we stopped deliveries.”

Report Claims Artura Could Be Canceled in 2028

Automotive News now reports that the McLaren Artura could be canceled as early as 2028. An anonymous McLaren dealer reportedly told the publication that the Artura’s time was up, citing the delays and problems as the main reasons.

“You don’t get a second chance to make a first impression,” the dealer reportedly said.

The dealer also suggested that the Artura struggled to establish a distinctive appeal among buyers.

“There was no headline to that car – the horsepower was okay, the price point was okay,” the dealer said. “It looked like a redesigned [McLaren] 570, and they removed the V8 and put in a V6 hybrid.”

What the Artura Brought to McLaren

Despite its early problems, the Artura is described as a very fast performance car that also introduced significant technology for 2022.

The supercar pioneered an axial flux motor rather than using electric motors on the front axle. It also featured domain-based Ethernet architecture designed to support an extremely fast software and hardware system.

If the hybrid supercar leaves production in 2028, it would have a six-year production run. In the supercar world, that can be a normal lifespan, although it would be a shorter one.

McLaren also added extra power and range through a complementary software update not long ago.

McLaren Artura’s Place in the Supercar Market

The Artura may not have attracted the same level of attention as the Ferrari 296, which is also a V6-powered PHEV using an axial flux motor positioned between the engine and transmission.

Even so, the Artura has had an impact on the supercar scene. A potential end to production in 2028 would mark the reported conclusion of the model’s run after its launch delays, quality issues and subsequent updates.
