The BMW M5 facelift has been spotted again during testing at the Nürburgring, offering another look at the upcoming update as BMW moves closer to applying its Neue Klasse design language to the current 5 Series generation.

A New Look Is Coming

BMW debuted the current-generation 5 Series three years ago, and while its styling remains debatable, the model still looks relatively fresh. However, those familiar with BMW’s product cycles know that the 5 Series is getting closer to its facelift.

As BMW shifts toward its Neue Klasse design language, the updated 5 Series is expected to adopt elements of that styling approach. The M5 will receive the same treatment, marking a gradual move away from the design philosophy of the current model after a relatively short period.

BMW M5 Spotted Testing at the Nürburgring

Spy shots of the Neue Klasse-influenced 5 Series have appeared from time to time, providing a general idea of what to expect. Both standard 5 Series models and the M5 have been spotted carrying extensive camouflage.

The latest sighting shows the M5 completing shakedown laps at the Nürburgring. The prototype does not appear to be wearing its production headlights yet, but its taillights are visible and look slightly darker than before.

One of the test cars also appears to feature DOT side marker lights at the front, raising the possibility that BMW is testing at least two versions of the M5.

Different M5 Configurations Under Testing?

The European and global versions of the M5 have to produce more power with the electric motor, while North American models retain the same engine-only output as before.

With that difference in mind, BMW could be checking whether a more engine-reliant version meets its testing requirements.

M5 Touring Also Spotted

The sedan was not the only M5 seen testing. The M5 Touring was also spotted stretching and cruising around the demanding track and one-way toll road.

The Touring prototype does not appear to wear side markers. Still, it would be surprising if BMW had configured a new Touring test car specifically for the U.S./Canadian market for shakedown testing.

On the track, the new M5 appears relatively well-behaved. However, the test drivers are the ones providing BMW with the feedback from these sessions, so the behavior of the production model cannot yet be determined from the sightings alone.

2028 BMW M5 Facelift Expected

The facelifted M5 is slated for the 2028 model year and could debut sometime in early 2027.

Before then, the regular 5 Series facelift is expected to make its debut, with the updated model potentially being revealed before the end of the year.
