The all-new, fifth-generation Hyundai Tucson has been unveiled in South Korea, bringing a boxy new design along with a range of new technologies, including Memory Reversing Assist. The system allows the SUV to remember the path it has just traveled and automatically retrace it in reverse, controlling the steering to help with maneuvering and parking in narrow or complex spaces.

Hyundai Tucson Adds Memory Reversing Assist

As its name suggests, Memory Reversing Assist records the vehicle’s recent path and allows the Tucson to follow that route backward. Hyundai said the technology can help eliminate the inconvenience of maneuvering and parking in tight and complicated spaces.

The technology itself is not entirely new. BMW offers a related function through Parking Assistant Professional, whose Manoeuvre Assistant can remember up to 10 maneuvers, with each covering a distance of up to 200 meters. Toyota also offers related memory-parking technology through Advanced Park.

With the next-generation Tucson becoming larger, however, the new smart parking feature could be particularly useful.

Fifth-Generation Tucson Gets Larger

The redesigned Hyundai Tucson is 60 mm (2.3 inches) longer and 40 mm (1.5 inches) wider than the previous model, while its wheelbase has increased by 30 mm (1.1 inches).

Inside, second-row headroom has increased by 29 mm (1.14 inches), while the door opening angle has grown from 73° to 83°, making it easier to get in and out of the vehicle.

Despite the larger and boxier dimensions, Hyundai said it improved airflow and reduced the drag coefficient from 0.33 to 0.30.

More Technology Inside the New Tucson

The fifth-generation Tucson also features a range of additional technologies. These include a surround-view monitor with Transparent View and Ground View, along with “door unlocking power redundancy,” which is designed to keep the doors capable of unlocking if the main power supply is cut off due to a crash.

The SUV also receives Pedal Misapplication Safety Assist. The system limits drive power and applies the brakes if the driver mistakenly presses hard on the accelerator instead of the brake.

Forward Parking Collision-Avoidance Assist (PCA-F) can provide braking assistance if the system detects a risk of hitting a pedestrian or obstacle while the vehicle is moving forward at low speeds.

New Pleos Connect Infotainment System

The Tucson is also equipped with Hyundai’s next-generation infotainment system, Pleos Connect, making it the first Hyundai SUV to receive the system.

Pleos Connect features Gleo AI, an LLM-powered generative AI assistant similar to Tesla’s Grok.

U.S. Hyundai Tucson Debut Expected in November

The technologies and equipment described at the unveiling apply to the Korean-spec Hyundai Tucson, meaning the final U.S. equipment list could differ. Still, the Korean model provides American buyers with an indication of what they can expect from the redesigned SUV.

The fifth-generation Hyundai Tucson is expected to make its U.S. debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November, with deliveries likely to begin the following year.
