Major Vehicle Safety Recalls

Major vehicle safety recalls continue to grow in 2026, with more than 300 campaigns already recorded this year across more than 100 manufacturers, according to figures compiled from National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) data. Brands including Ford, Jeep, Honda, Toyota, Kia, Subaru, and Nissan are among those affected. Every recall repair is legally required to be performed at no cost, and drivers can determine whether their vehicle is included by checking its Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).

Jeep Wrangler and Gladiator Lead the Largest Recall Campaign

The largest single recall campaign announced this year is a June action by Stellantis affecting approximately 1.08 million Jeep Wrangler and Jeep Gladiator vehicles.

The recall addresses a power-steering wiring fault that can create a fire risk even when the vehicle is switched off. According to NHTSA, the defect has been linked to dozens of fires, making it one of the most significant recall campaigns of 2026.

Ford Expands Recall Over Transmission Software Issue

Ford also launched a major safety recall identified as NHTSA ID 26V402 involving a transmission software defect that can damage the vehicle’s park mechanism and allow it to roll away.

The campaign covers:

  • 2018–2021 Ford Expedition
  • 2018–2021 Lincoln Navigator
  • 2020–2021 Ford Explorer
  • 2020–2021 Lincoln Aviator
  • 2021 Ford F-150

These models represent some of the highest-volume vehicles currently on U.S. roads.

Cadillac Vistiq Recall Halts Sales

General Motors recalled all 14,540 Cadillac Vistiq electric SUVs under NHTSA ID 26V394 after identifying an issue with the power-folding third-row seat.

The company said the seat may fail to reverse, creating a risk of trapping a smaller occupant. New-vehicle sales were paused while a repair is being prepared.

Honda Recalls SUVs and Pickup in Road Salt States

Honda recalled certain Pilot, Ridgeline, Passport, and Acura MDX models primarily located in the 23 states where road salt is commonly used.

The recall involves a rear suspension component that can corrode and fail, potentially affecting vehicle handling.

Nissan Sentra Included in 2025 Model Recall

Nissan recalled 946 examples of the 2025 Sentra under NHTSA ID 26V410.

The campaign addresses a driveshaft issue that can lead to power loss and vehicle rollaway, adding to several recall actions involving the compact sedan this year.

How to Check if Your Vehicle Has an Open Recall

Drivers can locate their 17-digit VIN on the driver’s side dashboard where it meets the windshield or on the vehicle registration documents.

Entering the VIN into the NHTSA recall lookup will show whether the vehicle has an open recall. If a recall is listed, owners should contact their local dealer to arrange the required repair, which is provided free of charge.

If a vehicle is covered by a “do not drive” or “do not park indoors” warning, owners should treat the situation as urgent and contact the manufacturer regarding towing or loaner vehicle options.

With hundreds of safety recalls already issued in 2026 across more than 100 manufacturers, checking a vehicle’s VIN remains the quickest way for owners to determine whether their vehicle requires a free safety repair.
