Hyundai has issued a recall affecting a limited number of Hyundai IONIQ 5, Kia EV9, and Kia EV6 vehicles in the United States after identifying a battery defect that could increase the risk of a fire. The automaker said the issue involves a small number of vehicles equipped with defective battery modules supplied during a specific production period.
Battery Defect Prompts Limited Recall
The recall covers six Hyundai IONIQ 5 vehicles from the 2023 and 2024 model years, one 2024 Kia EV9, and seven Kia EV6 vehicles from the 2022 through 2024 model years.
In a letter submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on July 9, Hyundai said the recall stems from misaligned electrodes inside a battery cell. According to the company, the defect could cause an internal short circuit that may lead to a fire.
Hyundai said it is not aware of any incidents, crashes, fires, or injuries in the United States related to the issue.
Investigation Identified Defective Battery Modules
After launching an investigation last month, Hyundai determined that a limited number of U.S. vehicles were equipped with defective battery modules produced by supplier SK On during a specific production period.
Guidance for Vehicle Owners
Hyundai said owners can continue driving their vehicles while waiting for repairs. However, the company recommends keeping the battery charge below 80% when charging.
As an additional precaution, Hyundai advised owners to park their vehicles outdoors and away from buildings until the repair has been completed.
Free Repairs and Owner Notifications
Owners can bring their affected vehicles to the nearest Hyundai dealer, where technicians will replace the battery system assembly (BSA). Hyundai said the repair will be provided free of charge regardless of whether the vehicle remains covered under the company’s new vehicle limited warranty.
Hyundai plans to mail owner notification letters on Aug. 31, 2026. Owners with questions can contact Hyundai customer service at 855-371-9460 and reference recall number 305.
Kia said it will begin mailing owner notification letters on Aug. 7, 2026. Kia owners can contact customer service at 1-800-333-4542 and reference recall number SC375.
Owners may also contact the NHTSA hotline at 1-888-327-4236 or visit the NHTSA website for additional information.
Recall Scope
The recall applies to vehicles in the United States and was filed with the NHTSA. Hyundai said the affected battery component was supplied by SK On in South Korea. The company has not issued a recall in any other markets.
The recall affects only a limited number of vehicles, and Hyundai said no U.S. incidents, crashes, fires, or injuries related to the defect have been reported to date.
