General Motors is exploring a new way to enhance pickup truck utility with a tailgate seat design described in a recently published U.S. patent application. The concept transforms a conventional tailgate into a more complete seating area by incorporating a backrest, armrests with cupholders, and a footrest, while still allowing the tailgate to function normally when folded away.
GM Files Patent for Integrated Tailgate Seat
Pickup trucks are designed with utility in mind, prompting automakers to develop new features that expand their functionality. While Rivian previously offered an optional Camp Kitchen that slid out from the R1T’s Gear Tunnel, General Motors is pursuing a different concept centered on the tailgate.
First reported by GM Authority, the patent application was filed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office on Jan. 13, 2025, and published on July 16, 2026, under publication number US 2026/0200380 A1.
Although pickup owners have long used tailgates as informal seating, GM’s design goes further by integrating a dedicated backrest, folding armrests with built-in cupholders, and a deployable footrest to create a more complete seating experience.
How the Tailgate Seat Works
To use the seat, the tailgate is first lowered. A concealed back panel is then raised, causing a folding support structure beneath it to unfold and lock into place for stability.
The armrests fold outward from both sides of the backrest, with each armrest incorporating a cupholder. The footrest is deployed by rotating its base downward from a recessed section of the tailgate before unfolding the foot plate.
When not in use, the backrest, armrests, and footrest fold flat into the tailgate. This design allows cargo to slide into and out of the truck bed without interference.
Potential Benefits and Trade-Offs
The seating system could provide additional comfort during sporting events, concerts, picnics, camping trips, work breaks, and traditional tailgate gatherings.
However, the added components could also increase the cost of GM pickup trucks such as the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra. Even if offered as an optional feature, the design could introduce additional mechanical components that may require repairs beyond those associated with a conventional tailgate.
Patent Does Not Confirm Production Plans
The published filing is a patent application and does not indicate that General Motors has approved the feature for production. Automakers frequently submit patent applications to protect new ideas from competitors or to preserve future licensing opportunities.
With the next-generation Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra already unveiled, the integrated tailgate seat could appeal to buyers interested in activities such as off-roading and camping. For now, however, the concept remains a patented design with no announced production timeline.
