Mazda is exploring a simple way to help drivers maintain the proper driving posture and adjust the steering wheel correctly. A patent filed with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office outlines a system designed to make finding the right steering wheel position easier while potentially improving safety and comfort.
How Mazda’s Steering Wheel System Could Work
The concept centers on the car’s digital instrument cluster. From the driver’s perspective, the display would hypothetically show a set of guiding lines on the left and right, visible within the inner circumference of the steering wheel.
The curved upper sections of those lines would act as reference points relative to the driver’s line of sight. When the steering wheel is aligned with them, the driver would know that it is positioned at the correct height.
The lines could appear on the display while the driver adjusts the steering wheel, although Mazda could also integrate them into the instrument cluster more permanently. The same guides could serve another purpose by directing the driver’s hands toward the 10 and two o’clock positions.
Safety and Comfort Are Key Considerations
The patent addresses more than convenience. An incorrect driving position can obstruct important readings on the instrument cluster, place unnecessary strain on the back or shoulders, and potentially contribute to more serious injuries during airbag deployment.
Maintaining the correct posture can also help reduce the effects of small positioning errors that may contribute to neck and shoulder discomfort. Those benefits could become more noticeable during extended drives or over the long term.
Could Mazda’s Idea Be Useful?
While the system may initially appear to be an unnecessary technology feature, its intended purpose is straightforward: provide drivers with a visual reference for positioning the steering wheel and maintaining an appropriate driving posture.
Even with such guidance available, some drivers may simply ignore it and choose the steering wheel position that feels most comfortable to them. Still, Mazda’s patent presents a relatively simple approach to addressing steering wheel positioning, combining safety and convenience in the instrument cluster.
