Volkswagen has confirmed the ID. Tiguan as the replacement for the ID.4 in North America, with the new electric crossover set to launch in Europe in early 2027 before arriving in the region. The new model will bring a completely fresh design and carry the established Tiguan name as Volkswagen moves beyond the ID.4.
A New Design for Volkswagen’s Electric Crossover
The ID.4 never reached the level of success Volkswagen had hoped for. Glitchy software, bland styling and confusing controls likely contributed to the automaker’s decision to end the SUV after the 2026 model year.
The new ID. Tiguan will feature a significantly different design. Volkswagen’s images still partially disguise the vehicle’s details, but the crossover features new headlights and taillights, along with squarer and more defined body panels replacing some of the ID.4’s swoopy lines.
While the design is more distinctive, the new crossover still does not look as adventurous as the Kia EV6, according to the source.
Volkswagen is also relying on the Tiguan name to provide recognition and trust that the ID.4 did not have. More than 8.3 million Tiguan vehicles have been produced.

ID. Tiguan Specifications and Availability
Volkswagen has not yet released specifications or interior images for the new ID. Tiguan. The source expects a sprightlier base trim, noting that the standard 282-horsepower single-motor ID.4 is capable but lacks the instant shove many buyers expect from a modern EV.
Top ID. Tiguan trims will likely use a more powerful dual-motor setup.
Charging performance will also be closely scrutinized when the new electric crossover arrives. The ID.4 has been unable to match the charging speeds of rivals from Kia, Hyundai and Tesla, while Volkswagen’s partnership with Electrify America also fell short because of poor charging-network reliability.
The ID. Tiguan will launch in Europe in early 2027, but Volkswagen has not specified the exact timing for its arrival in the U.S. The vehicle’s world premiere is scheduled for early October.
“The ID. Tiguan is planned to succeed the ID.4 in the North American market,” Volkswagen confirmed. “Following its European launch in early 2027, Volkswagen will share North American timing and additional market-specific details in due course.”
Why the ID. Tiguan Matters
The ID.4’s disappointing U.S. run was similar to that of the Toyota bZ4X and Honda Prologue EVs. Despite their experience in other vehicle segments, the legacy automakers launched electric products that were not competitive enough.
Toyota quickly launched the much-improved bZ, while Honda decided to cancel the Prologue. Volkswagen has taken longer to respond to the ID.4’s lukewarm reception, but the new ID. Tiguan is expected to reflect lessons learned from the earlier electric crossover.
If pricing is competitive and the charging and infotainment issues are addressed, the new ID. Tiguan could represent a significant change from the ID.4 as Volkswagen prepares to introduce its next electric crossover.
