The Toyota RAV4 has held its value better than the Honda CR-V after five years, according to an iSeeCars study, with the difference becoming even more pronounced when comparing their hybrid versions.
RAV4 and CR-V Remain Close Sales Rivals
The Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V are among the leading competitors in U.S. compact SUV sales. The RAV4 led sales last year, but the CR-V moved ahead in 2026 as Toyota dealt with inventory issues during the RAV4’s model update.
The comparison extends beyond sales. Both models are popular compact SUVs, but their five-year depreciation figures show a measurable difference in how much value they retain. The gap is particularly notable between the two hybrid models.
For 2026, the RAV4 has moved entirely to hybrid power, while the CR-V continues to offer both gas and hybrid options. The iSeeCars study, however, covers used vehicles sold from March 2025 through February 2026, meaning the data includes several different powertrain combinations.
Toyota RAV4 vs. Honda CR-V Depreciation
According to iSeeCars, the average vehicle lost 41.8% of its value after five years. Small SUVs performed considerably better, although the results varied among individual models.
- Toyota RAV4/RAV4 Hybrid: 25.20% five-year depreciation, with an average loss of $7,731 versus MSRP.
- Honda CR-V: 28.90% five-year depreciation, with an average loss of $8,946 versus MSRP.
- Toyota RAV4 Hybrid: 25.30% five-year depreciation, with an average loss of $8,319 versus MSRP.
- Honda CR-V Hybrid: 34.10% five-year depreciation, with an average loss of $12,165 versus MSRP.
The RAV4 leads both comparisons. iSeeCars recorded 25.2% depreciation for the combined RAV4 and RAV4 Hybrid category, compared with 28.9% for the Honda CR-V.
The hybrid comparison shows a wider gap. The RAV4 Hybrid depreciated 25.3% over five years, while the CR-V Hybrid lost 34.1% of its value.
Why the RAV4 Holds Its Value
iSeeCars attributes the strong resale performance of popular small SUVs to demand for both new and used vehicles. The RAV4 and CR-V both benefit from that demand, although the RAV4 retains slightly more of its value.
Toyota also performed strongly across the broader study. The automaker accounted for 10 of the 25 vehicles with the lowest depreciation rates, according to the study.
The hybrid figures provide another point of comparison. Hybrids overall lost 35.4% of their value after five years, compared with 57.2% for EVs. The RAV4 Hybrid’s 25.3% depreciation rate was substantially better than the overall hybrid figure, while the CR-V Hybrid was at 34.1%.
iSeeCars combines the RAV4 and RAV4 Hybrid in its small SUV ranking, meaning the 25.2% depreciation figure does not represent the gas-powered RAV4 alone. The study’s hybrid-only table lists the RAV4 Hybrid separately at 25.3%.
How the iSeeCars Study Was Calculated
The iSeeCars study analyzed more than 950,000 five-year-old used vehicles sold between March 2025 and February 2026. Original MSRPs were adjusted to 2026 dollars using data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Depreciation was then calculated by comparing those adjusted figures with used-vehicle pricing. Individual resale values can vary based on condition, trim and market conditions, but the study provides a broad comparison of how the RAV4 and CR-V families retain value over five years.
Both the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V depreciate less than the average vehicle in the study. The RAV4 shows the lower five-year depreciation rate in both the combined model comparison and the hybrid comparison.
