Mazda and Initial D have teamed up for an official collaboration featuring the two rotary-powered Mazda RX-7s driven by the Takahashi brothers in the popular Japanese manga and anime. The 1/64-scale models will be sold together as a set, marking the first official product collaboration between the two brands.
The Takahashi Brothers’ RX-7s
The collaboration pays tribute to Ryosuke Takahashi’s FC3S Savanna RX-7 and his younger brother Keisuke Takahashi’s yellow FD3S Infini RX-7. In Initial D, Ryosuke is known as the “White Comet of Akagi,” while Keisuke’s FD3S becomes the second car to race alongside Takumi Fujiwara for “Project D,” an expeditionary team seeking touge battles across Japan.
The two cars are among the key vehicles featured alongside Takumi Fujiwara’s Toyota AE86 Trueno. In the story, both Takahashi brothers retain their rotary powertrains throughout, with the collaboration depicting the earlier versions of their cars before later seasons and chapters introduced additional aerodynamic modifications.
Mazda Celebrates 60 Years of Rotary Power
The Initial D collaboration also marks the 60th anniversary of the release of the Cosmo Sport, described by Mazda as the first-ever mass-produced car powered by a rotary engine.
Mazda was one of the very few manufacturers to take the Wankel Rotary Engine concept and make it feasible for the masses. The rotary engine has continued to maintain a strong following, while the article also notes its potential applications in future Mazda models.
The set’s packaging features the Takahashi brothers racing on the touge. On the back, fans will find an image of the brothers, a signature from Initial D author Shuichi Shigeno and a quote from the manga expressing Ryosuke’s feelings about the rotary engine.
Initial D RX-7 Set: Price and Availability
The Mazda and Initial D collaboration is priced at ¥11,000 JPY, or about $70. The set is being offered through the Mazda Online Shop starting today, while fans attending the 2026 Mazda Fan Festa in Japan at Fuji Speedway might already have access to it.
The collaboration is also expected to be available at the Mazda Hiroshima Head Office Building 2 Lobby Shop and the Mazda Museum Goods Shop starting October 5, 2026. Mazda dealerships in Japan will begin receiving stock from October 8, 2026 onward.
The 1/64-scale set brings together the FC3S Savanna RX-7 and FD3S Infini RX-7 associated with the Takahashi brothers, combining the Initial D story with Mazda’s celebration of six decades of rotary-engine history.
