BMW has offered its clearest look yet at the production version of the electric M3, revealing design details of the first-ever all-electric M3 as the automaker marks a major milestone for its M Division.

BMW Shows the Production Electric M3

Almost seven months after BMW revealed the all-new i3 as an electric alternative to the 3 Series, the automaker presented the combustion-powered 2027 3 Series a week ago. Not long afterward, BMW’s M Division celebrated producing its millionth vehicle.

In a YouTube video announcing that milestone, BMW also provided a detailed look at the production version of the first-ever all-electric M3. The prototype wears tricolor camouflage, while the front plate confirms that the model will carry the M3 badge rather than an iM3 designation, despite other non-M electric BMW models using the “i” prefix.

Electric M3 Draws From the M Vision Neue Klasse

The production electric M3 closely follows the design direction established by BMW’s M Vision Neue Klasse concept, which was revealed in June and was presented as a direct influence on the production M3 EV.

Like the concept, the camouflaged prototype features a large, low-set rectangular diffuser divided in the middle by a partition. However, the production vehicle uses a single rectangular reverse light in that section.

The trimaran-inspired three-element design also works with the valley BMW has added to the center of its trunk lids and hoods, where the BMW roundel is positioned. On the electric M3, that shape draws attention to a notched trunk-lid spoiler that is taller than the spoiler on the new M350 and i3 M60.

The taillights may be slightly darker, although it remains unclear whether they are otherwise different. The prototype does feature the concept’s two stacked square red lights on either side of the diffuser, which BMW calls Track Lights.

More M-Specific Design Details

The Track Lights name also applies to the square white LEDs at the front of the vehicle. The M Vision Neue Klasse concept’s trimaran-style design is echoed in the substantial splitter and air dams.

The air dams appear to have rectangular openings with flaps behind them, which will presumably adjust according to aerodynamic and thermal requirements.

The headlights are also expected to feature M Yellow Lights, which are optional on the base 3 Series and will likely be standard on the electric M3. The prototype also shows more muscular fenders, a vented channel in the hood, multi-spoke wheels that appear to draw from the concept, and M-style mirrors with tricolor detailing.

The hood design also suggests that the frunk could be even less useful than the one in the i3, or potentially be deleted altogether.

Electric M3 Targets Up to 900 Horsepower

The electric M3 is expected to use a quad-motor, 800-volt setup capable of approximately 800 to 900 horsepower. The powertrain itself is capable of more than 1,341 horsepower, or one megawatt, but that level of output is expected to be reserved for future derivatives and potentially other products, including an electric M5.

Weight remains the biggest challenge. While both the i3 and gas-powered 3 Series come standard with panoramic glass roof panels, the camouflaged pre-production M3 has its roof wrapped. That raises the possibility that BMW could use a carbon-fiber roof or a plant-composite roof to help reduce the center of gravity.

Gas and Electric M3 Models Are Coming

BMW’s decision to provide a closer look at the electric M3 suggests that its reveal is not far away. The model is likely to arrive for the 2028 model year, allowing the G80 to go out with dignity.

BMW is also continuing with a gas-powered M3 featuring mild-hybrid assistance, pre-chamber ignition, and other performance and efficiency improvements.
