The Genesis GV80 Hybrid has officially made its global debut, giving the premium Korean automaker its first hybrid entry in a highly competitive SUV segment. The new GV80 combines a 2.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine with a hybrid system to produce 347 horsepower while delivering improved fuel efficiency compared with the GV80 2.5 Turbo.
Genesis GV80 Hybrid Enters a Competitive Segment
Genesis has spent the past two years expanding and refreshing its global lineup, with the premium Korean brand gaining positive market response. Its current range consists of fully electric and internal-combustion models, making the GV80 Hybrid its first move into the hybrid market.
The GV80 already competes in a segment that includes the BMW X5 and Lexus RX, both of which sell strongly. Genesis is now targeting that segment with a hybrid version of its existing SUV.
According to Genesis, the GV80 Hybrid is 16% more powerful than the ICE model and 29% more fuel-efficient than the GV80 2.5 Turbo.
347 Horsepower From a 2.5-Liter Hybrid
The GV80 Hybrid uses a 2.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine paired with a hybrid system. The combined output reaches 347 horsepower, exceeding the standard base engine and coming close to the 375-horsepower V6 variant.
The hybrid powertrain can accelerate the GV80 from 0 to 60 mph in 7.1 seconds.
Fuel efficiency is another major focus. The GV80 Hybrid has a 76-liter fuel tank and, according to Genesis, can travel about 912 kilometers, or 566 miles, on a full tank.
Genesis claims a combined fuel economy rating of 28 mpg, although that figure is based on Korean-market figures rather than EPA testing.
Hybrid System Focuses on Efficiency and Comfort
To reduce weight and improve efficiency, Genesis equips the GV80 Hybrid with a seven-speed transmission instead of the eight-speed unit. The transmission spins first gear in reverse when the vehicle is backing up.
The hybrid system is calibrated to remain in EV mode until 20 mph, with the goal of providing smoother and quieter driving at city speeds.
Genesis GV80 Hybrid Gets Ride and NVH Improvements
Genesis has also focused on reducing noise, vibration and harshness while improving ride comfort. The GV80 Hybrid receives a new final-drive ratio intended to improve overall performance while making the SUV quieter.
The transmission uses new Centrifugal Pendulum Absorber dampers, while additional changes improve the active noise-cancellation system.
Ride quality is further addressed with electronically controlled dual-valve shocks, stiffer springs at both ends and a stiffer rear sway bar.
GV80 Hybrid Adds V2L Capability
Although the GV80 Hybrid is not a plug-in hybrid, Genesis has equipped it with a V2L plug. The system can produce up to 3.6 kW with the engine running or draw up to 30% from the battery when the engine is off.
For now, the Genesis GV80 Hybrid is available only in South Korea. The model’s global debut, however, marks the latest expansion of Genesis’ hybrid lineup strategy as the brand continues to build its presence in the premium vehicle market.
