New spy shots show that Lucid’s delayed Cosmos electric crossover is still being developed, offering a closer look at the Tesla Model Y rival as the automaker works toward a launch in the second half of 2027 at the earliest.
The Cosmos was spotted by Reddit user u/always_trolled on Highway 101 between Gilroy and San Jose in Santa Clara, California. The vehicle was seen in Morgan Hill, roughly 40 miles from Lucid’s headquarters in Newark, suggesting the automaker was likely conducting freeway efficiency testing or something similar.
Lucid Cosmos Takes a Coupe SUV Design
The spy shots show only the driver’s side and rear of the midsize Lucid Cosmos, but its dramatically sloping roofline is clearly visible. The coupe-like profile gives the SUV an athletic appearance, while large wheels positioned inside bulbous wheel arches add to its sporty design.
Chiseled side skirts and recessed door handles are also visible. A green light appears at the top of the B-pillar, along with what appear to be other indicators that are not activated.
The sharply angled roofline ends in a large upturned spoiler, which could limit rear visibility. A camera positioned at the rearmost section of the roof is expected to address that issue.
The rear also features a very narrow LED strip that will form part of the taillight cluster. Although the front end is not visible in the spy shots, a patent filed in June previously offered an early look at the Cosmos.
Patent Drawings Reveal More Design Details
Like the Lucid Air, the Cosmos is shown with a narrow LED strip at the front, accompanied by slim headlights positioned underneath it.
Patent drawings filed in Europe also revealed a low, catfish-like intake grille designed for powertrain and brake cooling. An angled LED strip frames each end and could potentially serve as air curtain intakes or scoops for dedicated brake cooling inlets.
The drawings also showed that the thin rear light strip does not run continuously from end to end like the one on the Air. Instead, it is interrupted by a large Lucid wordmark.
Lucid Cosmos Targets a Sub-$50,000 Price
Underneath its exterior, the Lucid Cosmos will use the company’s new Midsize platform. The same platform also underpins the Earth SUV and another mystery vehicle that has not yet been announced.
The Cosmos is expected to use a 69 kWh battery pack with 300 miles of range. Lucid’s new Atlas drive units are lighter, smaller and cheaper to produce, and they should help the Cosmos reach its sub-$50,000 target base MSRP.
The vehicle could help Lucid attract a large portion of the relatively small overall EV market. If that happens, the company would be able to expand and produce more vehicles.
Cosmos Launch Delayed Until 2027
The Cosmos has been pushed to the second half of 2027 at the earliest. The delay comes as Lucid seeks to avoid the kinds of launch and ownership issues that affected the Air.
The source also notes that Lucid has the backing of Saudi Arabia’s primary sovereign wealth fund, meaning the company is not expected to fall as far as Fisker did anytime soon.
For the Cosmos, the focus remains on delivering a competitive and glitch-free product before affordable options from other automakers make it obsolete.
