Mercedes-AMG is taking its electric performance ambitions in a bold new direction with the 2028 Mercedes-AMG GT SUV, a high-performance luxury electric vehicle offering up to 1,153 horsepower, 1,475 lb-ft of torque, and a claimed range of up to 435 miles. Built on the company’s 800-volt AMG.EA platform, the SUV combines advanced electric powertrains with Formula One-inspired technology, track-focused driving features, and styling that breaks sharply from traditional AMG design. With three versions planned and U.S. deliveries expected to begin in summer 2027, the new model raises questions about how far the brand can move away from its combustion-engine heritage while maintaining its performance identity.

2028 Mercedes-AMG GT SUV: Power, Acceleration and Performance

The new Mercedes-AMG GT SUV will be offered in three versions: GT 53, GT 55, and GT 63. All three use the 800-volt AMG.EA platform, but their electric powertrains differ significantly.

The entry-level GT 53 combines two permanently excited synchronous motors, with one powering each axle, to produce 536 horsepower. The GT 55 and GT 63 use three axial flux motors, delivering up to 805 hp and 1,153 hp, respectively. The range-topping GT 63 also produces 1,475 lb-ft of torque, managed with the assistance of torque vectoring.

The most powerful version can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in as little as 2.4 seconds and reach 124 mph in just 6.8 seconds. Both acceleration figures are calculated using a one-foot rollout. The SUV’s top speed is 168 mph.

All three models feature all-wheel drive. Even the GT 53 can disconnect its front motor to improve efficiency, while the rear motor uses a two-speed transmission designed to support both efficiency and performance.

Braking equipment varies by trim. The GT 53 comes with steel brakes as standard, while carbon-ceramic brakes are optional on the GT 55 and standard on the GT 63.

AMG GT SUV Adds Simulated V8 Sounds and Drift Mode

Mercedes-AMG has also incorporated several features intended to reproduce elements of the traditional performance-driving experience in an electric SUV.

The GT 53 plays recordings of AMG six-cylinder engines, while the GT 55 and GT 63 use V8 sounds taken from the C 190 AMG GT-R. These features are part of the AMGFORCE Sport+ drive program, which also simulates gear changes that drivers can feel through the vibrating seat and activate using the steering-wheel paddles.

Pulling both paddles in any driving mode provides a temporary performance boost and tightens the seatbelts. The SUV also includes launch control, a drag race mode, and individual rotary controls for throttle response, handling dynamism, and traction.

For drivers interested in circuit performance, the AMG GT SUV offers an AMG Track Pace app that records and displays track-specific information, including lap and sector times. A Predictive Performance Manager adjusts energy deployment around a circuit according to RACE or SPRINT modes, while a dedicated drift function adds another motorsport-inspired capability.

The GT 55 and GT 63 also feature an active AEROKINETICS roof spoiler. These additions give the electric SUV an extensive collection of performance features, extending beyond acceleration and straight-line speed.

Advanced Suspension and Chassis Technology

The GT 63 comes standard with AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL+, which is optional on the GT 55. The system combines three-stage adjustable air springs with hydraulic interconnection between the dampers, eliminating the need for conventional anti-roll bars.

Multi-link suspension setups at the front and rear work alongside standard rear-axle steering. Together, these systems are designed to improve maneuverability at low speeds and stability at higher speeds.

The SUV’s body-in-white structure combines aluminum, steel, and fiber-reinforced composites. Its underlying engineering closely mirrors that of the AMG GT 4-Door Coupe, despite the SUV’s different body style.

Mercedes-AMG GT SUV Battery, Range and Charging

Battery capacity depends on the trim level. The GT 53 uses a 106 kWh battery, while the GT 55 and GT 63 receive a larger 128 kWh pack. Both configurations use directly cooled cylindrical cells.

Mercedes-AMG cites a combined driving range of up to 435 miles under the WLTP test cycle. The EPA’s estimates are expected to be closer to 400 miles combined, according to the original report.

Charging capability is another major feature. Models equipped with the larger battery support DC fast charging at up to 710 kW, while the smaller battery supports up to 600 kW. Under suitable conditions, the battery can recharge from 10% to 80% in as little as 12 minutes.

The SUV can also switch to 400-volt mode at compatible charging stations, and U.S.-specification models come standard with an NACS charging port.

At a 400 kW charging station, the larger battery can charge from 10% to 80% in 16 minutes, while the smaller battery takes 14 minutes. Over a 10-minute charging session, the smaller battery can recover up to 236 miles of range, compared with up to 279 miles for the larger pack.

2028 Mercedes-AMG GT SUV Exterior Design

The Mercedes-AMG GT SUV adopts the styling direction introduced by the AMG GT 4-Door Coupe, but its proportions and front-end details give the design a different character.

At the front, a concave grille-like panel is flanked by two vertical air inlets that resemble gills, along with a larger opening finished in black. A narrow duct sits above the grille-like panel, while the headlights feature three-pointed-star graphics within a design reminiscent of the Maserati Ghibli.

Buyers can optionally add illumination to the central badge and grille outline. The hood also features raised power bulges, while the rear design draws more directly from the four-door model.

At the back, triple-star lighting elements inspired by the AMG GT XX Concept sit on either side of a gloss-black fascia panel. A diffuser-style element rises into the rear bumper, and additional decorative vents behind the rear wheels complete the design.

In profile, squared wheel arches feature prominent surrounds, while the front fenders carry AMG badging and an additional vent. The result is a visually busy exterior that remains recognizable as a Mercedes, particularly in darker paint colors.

The styling is more dramatic than that of the Porsche Cayenne Electric or Bentley Torcal, according to the original report. AMG forged wheels are available with color accents for the first time, and customers can choose from more than 60 MANUFAKTUR paint options.

Mercedes-AMG GT SUV Interior and Technology

Inside, the AMG GT SUV follows the approach of its four-door counterpart, combining digital displays with physical controls and premium materials.

The dashboard features a 10.2-inch driver display connected to a 14-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The center console retains physical switchgear for drive-mode selection, hazard lights, volume control, and other functions. Two cupholders and two wireless charging pads are also included.

A separate 14-inch display for the front passenger is available as an option. Buyers can instead direct their spending toward AMG Performance seats, special upholstery materials and colors, or the available Burmester High-End 4D Surround Sound System.

The optional SKY CONTROL panoramic glass roof offers opaque, transparent, and illuminated AMG themes. In the rear, the SUV has a three-passenger bench with folding seatbacks and power-folding headrests.

Cargo Space and Practicality

Despite its SUV body style, the AMG GT offers relatively limited cargo capacity. The rear cargo area provides 21.4 cubic feet of space, while the front storage compartment holds just 2.8 cubic feet.

The front compartment also houses a signed plaque declaring the vehicle “Born in Affalterbach.” The detail emphasizes the SUV’s electric identity rather than the hand-built V8 engines associated with AMG’s traditional “One Man, One Engine” philosophy.

2028 Mercedes-AMG GT SUV Price and U.S. Availability

Mercedes-AMG has not announced official starting prices for the new GT SUV. However, six-figure starting prices are expected when the vehicle reaches U.S. dealerships in summer 2027.

All three versions—the GT 53, GT 55, and GT 63—are scheduled to be available at launch. The lineup will offer buyers a choice between a 536-horsepower entry-level model and a flagship version producing up to 1,153 horsepower.

Can the Electric AMG GT SUV Win Over Traditionalists?

The Mercedes-AMG GT SUV represents another significant departure from the brand’s traditional performance formula. Its electric powertrain, unconventional styling, simulated engine sounds, and drift mode differ sharply from the characteristics that have long defined AMG’s combustion-powered models.

However, the SUV’s styling may suit its proportions better than those of the AMG GT 4-Door Coupe, and performance SUVs have been part of AMG’s lineup since before the turn of the millennium. The brand’s earlier production cars from the early 1990s were also considered relatively bold in appearance compared with traditional Mercedes-Benz models of their era.

The engineering behind the new electric SUV is extensive, from its axial flux motors and advanced suspension to its high-voltage battery system and rapid charging capability. Whether those features, combined with its six-figure expected price and distinctive styling, will attract enough buyers remains an open question.

For now, the 2028 Mercedes-AMG GT SUV marks another step in Affalterbach’s move toward electric performance, with all three models expected to reach U.S. dealerships in summer 2027.
