The Chinese-made Jaecoo 7 topped the U.K.’s new-car sales rankings in September, highlighting the growing competitiveness of Chinese automakers as established brands raise concerns about their potential entry into the U.S. market. With competitive pricing, multiple powertrain options and upscale styling, the compact SUV is gaining traction in Europe, where Chinese vehicles are priced 30% to 40% below competing models in markets such as Italy, Spain and France.

Jaecoo 7 Leads U.K. Car Sales in September

Established automakers, including Ford and Hyundai, have raised concerns about Chinese brands entering the U.S. market. Hyundai has pointed to their expanding presence in Europe and the U.K.’s lower tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles, noting the substantial price advantage Chinese manufacturers enjoy in several European markets.

Figures released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) showed the Jaecoo 7 leading U.K. vehicle registrations in September with 10,814 units. The Tesla Model 3 placed second with 9,929 registrations, followed by the Ford Puma with 6,958, the Kia Sportage with 6,521 and the Tesla Model Y with 5,946.

September marked the second time this year that the Chinese SUV topped the U.K. sales rankings. The Jaecoo 7 previously claimed the top spot in March, underscoring its growing presence in the market.

Why the Jaecoo 7 Is Attracting Buyers

The Jaecoo 7 is a compact crossover that combines competitive pricing with a range of powertrain options and upscale styling. Its appearance has earned it the nickname “Temu Range Rover.”

Buyers can choose gasoline, hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions, giving the model broader appeal among consumers with different driving needs. High fuel prices linked to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East have also increased interest in electrified vehicles.

The brand is a sub-brand of Chinese automaker Chery, which plans to expand its presence in Europe. One potential avenue is manufacturing vehicles at Nissan’s Sunderland plant in the U.K., possibly including the Jaecoo 7.

Such an arrangement could help Chery reduce its exposure to future trade barriers while supporting its broader European expansion plans.

Jaecoo 7 Prices Undercut Major Competitors

Pricing is a key part of the Jaecoo 7’s appeal. The hybrid version starts at £29,210, or about $38,800, making it less expensive than several competing models.

The Kia Sportage Hybrid, for example, starts at £34,895, or about $46,300. The Jaecoo 7 plug-in hybrid also has a substantial price advantage over the Toyota RAV4 plug-in hybrid, undercutting it by £9,025, or about $12,000.

The Jaecoo 7 PHEV starts at £35,170, or about $46,700, giving buyers another comparatively affordable option in the electrified SUV segment.

Could Low Prices Help Chinese Automakers Enter the U.S. Market?

The Jaecoo 7’s performance in the U.K. suggests that competitive pricing can help unfamiliar automotive brands attract buyers. Research, including a study from Cox Automotive, supports the idea that some American consumers would consider buying Chinese vehicles if the prices were low enough.

Price could be an important factor in the U.S. market, where the average new-car transaction price reached $50,562 in September.

Chinese automakers remain largely absent from the U.S. market despite expanding into Canada and Mexico. Their potential arrival in the United States has nevertheless drawn attention from established automakers.

Ford believes Chinese brands could enter the U.S. market within the next decade. President Donald Trump has also expressed openness to Chinese automakers building vehicles in the United States and hiring American workers.

Chinese Automakers Continue Expanding Worldwide

Although the timing and likelihood of Chinese automakers entering the U.S. market remain uncertain, their growing presence in Europe demonstrates the competitive pressure they can bring to established brands.

The Jaecoo 7’s success in the U.K., supported by its pricing and range of powertrain options, illustrates how Chinese manufacturers are gaining ground in international markets. Their continued expansion offers a preview of the competition American automakers could eventually face.
