Europe’s electric vehicle market recorded a major surge in September, with battery-electric vehicle registrations climbing 70.3% year over year to 300,202 across 17 key European markets. Fully electric cars accounted for 32.6% of new registrations, as higher oil prices, government subsidies and a growing selection of more affordable models helped drive demand, according to Reuters.

The increase highlights the continued strength of Europe’s electric vehicle market despite ongoing debates over emissions regulations and the pace of the transition away from conventional cars. Germany and France recorded strong results, while Nordic countries maintained some of the highest electric vehicle adoption rates in Europe.

Germany and France Lead Europe’s Electric Vehicle Market

Germany recorded 88,724 battery-electric vehicle registrations in September, giving fully electric cars a 34.6% share of its new-car market. France followed with 65,243 registrations, representing a higher market share of 41.7%.

The Nordic countries continued to lead in electric vehicle adoption. Norway posted a battery-electric vehicle share of 98.8%, followed by Denmark at 88.8%, Finland at 62.7% and Sweden at 49%.

These figures highlight the differences in how quickly European countries are transitioning to electric vehicles. While some markets have made fully electric cars a dominant choice among new-car buyers, others continue to record significantly lower adoption rates.

EV Adoption Remains Uneven Across Europe

Battery-electric vehicles accounted for roughly half of new registrations in Ireland, Portugal, Belgium and the Netherlands. By contrast, the Czech Republic, Italy and Poland remained among the markets with the lowest adoption rates.

The battery-electric share of new registrations reached 11.2% in the Czech Republic, 7.6% in Italy and 6.2% in Poland. The figures underscore the wide differences in electric vehicle adoption across the continent.

Government incentives, the availability of vehicles and local market conditions all influence how quickly consumers move toward electric power. Differences in these factors continue to shape the pace of the transition from conventional vehicles to battery-electric models.

Europe’s EV Sales Rise 38.1% in 2026

September’s increase helped push year-to-date battery-electric vehicle registrations in Europe to 1.98 million, a 38.1% increase compared with the same period in 2025.

Automakers have continued expanding their electric vehicle lineups, including by introducing more affordable models aimed at buyers who might otherwise choose gasoline-powered or hybrid vehicles. The broader selection of models has been one of the factors supporting the market’s growth.

Higher oil prices and government subsidies also contributed to September’s increase, according to Reuters. Together, these factors helped battery-electric vehicles secure a larger share of new-car registrations across the 17 markets covered by the figures.

EU Emissions Policy Debate Continues Amid EV Growth

The rise in electric vehicle registrations comes as European policymakers debate how to balance emissions targets with the challenges facing the automotive industry.

France and Germany recently agreed on a position aimed at softening proposed European Union car emissions rules. Despite the policy uncertainty, September’s registration figures showed continued momentum for battery-electric vehicles across the region.

However, a single month’s increase does not establish how the market will perform over the longer term. Future growth will depend on several factors, including vehicle prices, the range of available models, government support and consumers’ willingness to choose electric vehicles over conventional alternatives.

What September’s EV Sales Mean for Europe’s Auto Industry

September’s figures show that electric cars are capturing a growing share of Europe’s new-car market, with registrations rising sharply in several major markets and adoption approaching saturation in Norway and Denmark.

At the same time, the substantial differences between countries demonstrate that the transition remains uneven. For automakers, sustaining growth will depend on offering competitive prices and a wider selection of vehicles while responding to changing consumer demand and government policies.
