The Hennessey Blackbird is taking a different approach to hypercar performance, combining a naturally aspirated V8, rear-wheel drive and a six-speed manual transmission instead of chasing the extreme horsepower figures and electrification increasingly found in modern performance cars. The car is expected to enter production in 2029 or 2030, with just 71 examples planned and a starting price of $2.5 million each.

The Blackbird’s traditional engineering stands in sharp contrast to its predecessor, the Hennessey Venom F5, which can produce more than 2,000 horsepower. Rather than pursuing those numbers, Hennessey is targeting approximately 800 to 850 horsepower for its latest project.

Hennessey Blackbird Takes a Back-to-Basics Approach

One of the Blackbird’s defining features is its naturally aspirated 6.2-liter V8. While automakers increasingly use turbochargers and electrification to increase performance, Hennessey is pursuing a more traditional formula focused on driver involvement.

The Lamborghini Revuelto takes a different approach, combining a V12 engine with three electric motors to become the brand’s first production car with more than 1,000 horsepower.

The Blackbird, by comparison, will pair its V8 with rear-wheel drive and a six-speed gated manual gearbox. The configuration emphasizes a traditional driving experience at a time when many automakers are struggling to justify offering manual transmissions.

A Traditional Interior With Practical Features

The Blackbird’s cabin follows the same philosophy as its mechanical setup, favoring a conventional sports-car layout over a screen-heavy interior. The only screen is a digital rearview mirror display designed to improve rear visibility and help meet safety requirements.

Nathan Malinick, Hennessey’s director of design, explained that the development team considered their wives when designing the car. The result includes a spacious interior and a front trunk, or frunk, large enough to accommodate two full-size carry-on bags.

The combination of traditional controls and practical storage reflects an effort to make the Blackbird more than a machine focused solely on performance figures.

Jet Aircraft Inspire the Hennessey Blackbird Design

The Blackbird takes its name and much of its design inspiration from the SR-71 Blackbird, a spy plane that flew at such high altitudes and speeds that it could evade enemy missiles.

The car’s bodywork draws on the aircraft’s appearance, including distinctive side air intakes. Its headlights incorporate diamond-shaped elements inspired by the Bell X-1, the aircraft Chuck Yeager flew when he became the first pilot to break the sound barrier.

The rear design continues the aviation theme, with taillights shaped to resemble jet afterburners.

Hennessey Blackbird Production and Pricing

The vehicle shown was a proof of concept rather than a completed production model. Production is expected to begin in 2029 or 2030, although the final production version has yet to arrive.

The car’s development team has expressed interest in getting a working prototype on the road. Hennessey plans to build only 71 examples, with each car starting at $2.5 million.

A Different Vision of Hypercar Performance

The Hennessey Blackbird represents a deliberate move away from escalating horsepower figures and increasingly complex powertrains. Its naturally aspirated V8, gated manual transmission and rear-wheel-drive layout place the focus on a more traditional connection between driver and machine.

With production planned for 2029 or 2030, the Blackbird will enter a performance-car market increasingly shaped by electrification. Its limited production run and $2.5 million starting price position it as a distinct alternative to high-powered, technology-focused hypercars.
