A hazardous chemical spill following an explosion at a Toledo, Ohio, facility prompted the evacuation of Jeep’s Northern Toledo production plant and disrupted operations at the automaker’s assembly facility. The incident occurred late Tuesday evening, October 20, triggering an evacuation zone extending one mile from the spill site and shelter-in-place instructions for people within three miles.

Jeep Toledo Plant Evacuated After Chemical Spill

Authorities initially ordered approximately 300 residents within a half-mile radius of the incident to evacuate. The evacuation zone was later expanded to one mile around the site.

The chemical spill occurred at the MC Tank Terminal following an explosion. Officials instructed everyone living or working within one mile of the incident to leave the area until further notice.

People within three miles of the site were advised to shelter in place, keep doors and windows closed, keep pets indoors and shut off ventilation systems that bring outside air into buildings.

North Plant Evacuated as South Plant Closes

Jeep’s Toledo assembly facility consists of two plants, north and south, where the Wrangler and Gladiator are built. Because the northern plant falls within the one-mile evacuation zone, workers were evacuated following reports of the spill.

The northern plant was evacuated on the night of October 20. Both the first and second shifts scheduled for October 21 were canceled, while the southern plant was closed for the remainder of the week.

The potential impact on production schedules and future vehicle supplies remains unclear.

Protecting union members and workers remains the priority, and the situation will continue to be monitored closely.

Glycidyl Methacrylate: Potential Health Risks

The hazardous material involved in the incident was identified as glycidyl methacrylate, a plastic additive that can irritate the eyes, nose, mouth and skin, causing burning sensations.

Anyone exposed to the substance is advised to shower or immediately rinse the affected area. Overexposure can also cause headaches, dizziness, tiredness, nausea and vomiting.

Production Impact Remains Unclear

The evacuation and temporary closures disrupted operations at Jeep’s Toledo assembly facility. However, the extent of any longer-term production impact has not been determined as the response to the chemical spill continues.
