2027 Volkswagen Jetta Safety Ratings Fall Behind Mazda 3

The 2027 Volkswagen Jetta has fallen short of earning a top safety award in the latest crash-test results, while the Mazda 3 has secured the highest safety distinction among three competing compact sedans. The Toyota Corolla also failed to qualify for an award, leaving the Mazda 3 as the only model of the three to meet the strictest safety standards in the latest evaluations.

The results highlight differences in crash protection and collision-prevention performance among three affordable sedans. Although all three offer safety technologies, their latest evaluations reveal shortcomings that prevented the Jetta and Corolla from earning recognition.

Volkswagen Jetta and Toyota Corolla Miss Safety Awards

Vehicles are evaluated across six categories when determining eligibility for top safety awards. These assessments cover crash protection, headlights and systems designed to prevent collisions with other vehicles and pedestrians.

The six evaluation categories are:

  • Small overlap front
  • Moderate overlap front
  • Side
  • Headlights
  • Front crash prevention (vehicle-to-vehicle)
  • Front crash prevention (pedestrian)

Each category receives a rating of Good, Acceptable, Marginal or Poor. Vehicles must earn a Good rating in every crash test to qualify for a safety award, while crash-prevention systems must receive at least an Acceptable rating.

The three sedans produced different results across these evaluations.

Volkswagen Jetta vs. Mazda 3 vs. Toyota Corolla: Results

  • 2027 Volkswagen Jetta: Good in the small overlap front and moderate overlap front tests, Acceptable in the side test, Marginal for headlights and pedestrian crash prevention, and not tested for vehicle-to-vehicle crash prevention.
  • Mazda 3: Good in the small overlap front, moderate overlap front and side tests. Its headlights received a Good or Acceptable rating, while vehicle-to-vehicle crash prevention was rated Acceptable and pedestrian crash prevention earned a Good rating.
  • Toyota Corolla: Good in the small overlap front and side tests, Marginal in the moderate overlap front test, and Good for headlights and both vehicle-to-vehicle and pedestrian crash prevention.

The Jetta’s Acceptable side-impact rating and Marginal pedestrian crash-prevention rating prevented it from qualifying for an award. The Corolla was disqualified by its Marginal result in the moderate overlap front test.

The Mazda 3 delivered the strongest overall performance of the three models, with no rating below Acceptable. It also earned the best results across all three crash tests, securing the Top Safety Pick+ award.

Where the Jetta and Corolla Fell Short

The Jetta’s pedestrian crash-prevention system was unable to avoid a collision with a pedestrian in certain tests. Its Marginal rating in this category, combined with its Acceptable side-impact result, kept the sedan from meeting the requirements for a safety award.

The Corolla’s main weakness emerged in the moderate overlap front test, which simulates a collision at 40 mph involving 40% of the vehicle’s width. The evaluation found that rear-seat passengers were vulnerable to chest injuries, contributing to the sedan’s Marginal rating in that category.

Although the Jetta and Corolla did not qualify for awards, their results do not mean buyers should automatically rule them out. Both vehicles still provide a strong level of protection, but their latest evaluations show that they fall short of the Mazda 3 under current safety standards.

Mazda 3 Builds an Impressive Safety Record

The Mazda 3 has been on sale since 2019 and has not received a major facelift during that period. Its strong crash-test performance adds to Mazda’s growing reputation for vehicle safety.

Several other Mazda models have also earned the Top Safety Pick+ award, including:

  • Mazda 3 Hatchback
  • Mazda CX-30
  • Mazda CX-5
  • Mazda CX-50
  • Mazda CX-70
  • Mazda CX-90

The Miata is the only current Mazda model that has not earned the distinction, but it has not been tested. The brand’s performance across its other models reflects a consistent record of strong safety results.

Earlier in 2026, Mazda was also named the top brand in a safety assessment that considers more than crash protection. Additional factors include distraction-free controls, emergency handling, braking performance and standard safety equipment.

The recognition reflects a broader approach to safety that extends beyond a vehicle’s ability to protect occupants during a collision.

What the Safety Ratings Mean for Car Buyers

Vehicle safety remains an important consideration across price categories, from a $25,000 budget sedan to a $150,000 SUV. As testing procedures continue to evolve, safety evaluations give buyers more information to consider when choosing a new vehicle.

The latest results distinguish the Mazda 3 from the Volkswagen Jetta and Toyota Corolla, particularly for shoppers who prioritize the highest safety ratings.

While the Jetta and Corolla continue to offer a strong level of protection, the Mazda 3 is the only one of the three compact sedans to earn the Top Safety Pick+ award in these evaluations.
