The 2027 Ford Ranger is set to receive a major engine change, with the 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 reportedly being replaced by a larger 3.0-liter V6. The new engine is expected to deliver a significant power increase, bringing the standard Ranger closer to the performance of the Ranger Raptor and the updated Bronco.
The 2027 model year will also bring updates to driver-assistance technology, new wheel designs and additional exterior color options. The reported engine change follows similar moves involving the Bronco and F-150, where the smaller V6 has already been discontinued.
2027 Ford Ranger Gets a New 3.0-Liter V6
The 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 is reportedly being removed from the 2027 Ford Ranger lineup and replaced with a 3.0-liter V6. The change does not mean the pickup will switch to an exclusively four-cylinder engine lineup.
The existing 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine will remain available, producing 270 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. The new 3.0-liter V6 will be optional on the XLT and Lariat trims and will require four-wheel drive.
All 2027 Ford Ranger models will continue to offer a 10-speed automatic transmission. The final output figures for the new engine have not yet been confirmed.
How Much Power Could the 2027 Ford Ranger V6 Deliver?
The 3.0-liter V6 is a less powerful version of the engine used in the Bronco and Ranger Raptor. In the Ranger Raptor, it produces 405 horsepower, while the Bronco version delivers 418 hp.
In the 2027 Bronco, the engine produces 380 hp and 440 pound-feet of torque. The 2027 Ranger is expected to deliver similar figures, although its final specifications remain unconfirmed.
If those estimates prove accurate, the new engine would offer a substantial improvement over the outgoing 2.7-liter V6, which produces 330 hp and 415 lb-ft of torque.
2027 Ford Ranger Adds Driver-Assistance Features
The engine update is not the only change planned for the 2027 Ranger. Ford is also expanding its driver-assistance technology across the lineup.
The CoPilot360 system will gain intersection assist and lane-keeping features on the XL trim. Meanwhile, CoPilot360 Assist 2.0, which includes a wider range of advanced driver-assistance features, will become standard on the XLT.
New wheel designs and exterior color choices are also planned for the 2027 model year.
Is Ford Discontinuing the 2.7-Liter EcoBoost V6?
The Ranger was the last vehicle in Ford’s lineup to offer the 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6. The automaker has already discontinued the engine in the Bronco and F-150, making its reported removal from the Ranger consistent with those changes.
The first generation of the engine was used from 2015 to 2019 in vehicles ranging from the F-150 to the Fusion. The second-generation engine debuted in the 2018 F-150 and was later limited to the F-150, Bronco and Ranger.
With the reported 2027 changes, the 2.7-liter V6 would no longer be available in any of those vehicles.
However, the engine’s underlying design will continue through the 3.0-liter EcoBoost, which is based on the 2.7-liter and has been in use since 2016.
The 3.0-liter engine powers the two Raptor models and the Explorer. For 2027, it is also expected to be offered in the standard Bronco and Ranger, as well as the F-150.
Ford 3.0-Liter EcoBoost Reliability and Common Issues
The 3.0-liter EcoBoost is generally considered fairly reliable today, but it has experienced several issues over the years. One concern is carbon buildup, which can restrict airflow and reduce fuel economy.
A more serious issue affects certain 2021 and 2022 Ford and Lincoln vehicles equipped with the 3.0-liter V6. Faulty valves may fracture and fall into a cylinder, potentially causing catastrophic engine damage.
Oil and coolant leaks can also become more common as the engine approaches 100,000 miles. Potential oil leak points include the valve covers and oil pan gasket.
Coolant leaks may develop around cracked hoses, plastic reservoirs and the water pump. These potential problems are worth considering when evaluating the engine’s long-term condition.
What the 2027 Ford Ranger Engine Change Means
The reported switch to the 3.0-liter V6 would give the 2027 Ford Ranger a more powerful engine option while retaining the 2.3-liter four-cylinder. It would also bring the standard Ranger in line with Ford’s broader shift toward the larger V6 across several models.
The final power figures for the 2027 Ranger remain unconfirmed, but the expected change would mark a significant update to the pickup’s available engine lineup.
