Audi is recalling 9,048 electric SUVs in the United States over a potential high-voltage battery fire risk. The recall covers certain 2024-2025 Audi Q4 e-tron and Q4 Sportback e-tron models whose battery cells may not meet required quality standards.

The recall follows an earlier Volkswagen ID.4 recall involving a similar potential battery fire hazard. Audi is investigating the cause and developing a permanent remedy, while some owners may need to limit charging to below 80% until further notice.

Audi Q4 e-tron Recall Covers More Than 9,000 SUVs

The recall affects 9,048 vehicles, including 7,040 units of the 2024-2025 Audi Q4 e-tron and 2,008 units of the 2024-2025 Audi Q4 Sportback e-tron.

The affected SUVs contain high-voltage battery cells from a potentially problematic production batch. Audi says some batteries may not meet required quality standards because of possible manufacturing deviations.

The battery modules were supplied by SK Battery Manufacturing in Hungary. The underlying cause of the issue remains under investigation.

Audi Battery Cells Could Overheat During Charging

The potential safety concern involves charging the affected batteries beyond 80%. Under certain circumstances, heat could spread from one battery cell to another, potentially leading to a fire.

Audi began investigating after learning about battery thermal incidents involving other Volkswagen Group vehicles, including the Volkswagen ID.4, last month. Further investigation identified a batch of Q4 e-tron vehicles equipped with batteries linked to the same potential issue.

No fires, crashes or injuries involving the recalled Audi Q4 e-tron vehicles have been reported. The recall is precautionary while the company continues investigating the battery cells and determining the appropriate corrective action.

Audi Owners May Need to Limit Charging to 80%

Audi has not yet finalized a permanent fix. Vehicles whose battery data can be verified and whose batteries pass the necessary checks may not require the temporary charging restriction.

However, if a vehicle’s battery data is unavailable or requires further investigation, owners will be instructed to limit charging to below 80%. Those vehicles will also receive additional battery inspections at a dealership.

Further steps may be necessary depending on the inspection results. The charging limit will remain in place for affected vehicles until Audi provides a permanent solution or confirms that the restriction is no longer necessary.

How to Check Whether Your Audi Q4 e-tron Is Recalled

Audi plans to begin notifying owners by December. Vehicle identification number lookups are already available through the recall system.

Owners can check their vehicle identification number to determine whether their SUV is included in the recall and follow the instructions provided by Audi or their dealership.

Not every recalled Q4 e-tron will necessarily require the temporary 80% charging limit. Owners should confirm the specific guidance for their vehicle before changing their charging routine.

Audi Continues Its Investigation Into the Battery Issue

The recall affects selected 2024-2025 Audi Q4 e-tron and Q4 Sportback e-tron models equipped with potentially defective high-voltage battery cells. Although no fires or injuries have been reported involving the affected Audi vehicles, the possibility of overheating during charging has prompted precautionary action.

Audi is continuing its investigation and working toward a permanent remedy. In the meantime, affected owners should check their recall status and follow any charging restrictions or inspection instructions issued for their vehicle.
