The Subaru BRZ 60th Anniversary Edition celebrates six decades of Subaru’s boxer engine with exclusive styling, performance-focused upgrades and production limited to just 66 units. Introduced to mark the 60th anniversary of the automaker’s first boxer engine, the special edition is available exclusively in China, highlighting a powertrain that is expected to disappear from Subaru’s European lineup by 2028 because of stricter emissions and other regulations.
Subaru Celebrates 60 Years of Boxer Engines
Subaru introduced its first boxer engine in the Subaru 1000 in 1966. Six decades later, the automaker remains one of the few major manufacturers, alongside Porsche, that continues to use this engine configuration widely.
Boxer engines feature opposing pistons that move in opposite directions, helping cancel out vibrations and deliver smoother operation. Their lower center of gravity can also reduce body roll and improve vehicle handling.
The BRZ 60th Anniversary Edition brings renewed attention to this engineering tradition. However, the model is available exclusively in China, even as Subaru prepares to phase out boxer engines from its European lineup by 2028 because of stricter emissions and other regulations.
BRZ 60th Anniversary Edition Gets Exclusive Upgrades
The anniversary BRZ is not Subaru’s only model celebrating the milestone. Earlier this year, the automaker introduced 60th Anniversary Edition packages for the Crosstrek and Forester in China.
The BRZ special edition features 60th-anniversary graphics, exclusive gray paint and STI accents on the front fenders. It also comes equipped with an STI flexible V-shaped strut brace designed to improve steering response and chassis behavior.
Safety technology receives an upgrade through a new wide-angle monocular camera for Subaru’s EyeSight system. The camera improves the system’s ability to detect pedestrians and cyclists, particularly at low-speed intersections.
The U.S.-market BRZ is also receiving a new wide-angle monocular camera for the 2027 model year. Rear parking sensors have additionally been introduced for the BRZ tS.
Engine Output Remains Unchanged
Despite its anniversary-specific enhancements, the BRZ 60th Anniversary Edition retains the same 2.4-liter naturally aspirated boxer-four engine used in the standard model.
The engine is also found in the Toyota GR86 and produces approximately 231 horsepower in China, compared with 228 horsepower in the United States.
The manual-transmission version of the anniversary edition gains a Sport mode designed to improve throttle responsiveness. The engine itself remains unchanged, keeping the focus on styling, chassis enhancements and additional features rather than increased power.
Subaru BRZ 60th Anniversary Edition Prices
In China, the manual-equipped BRZ 60th Anniversary Edition is priced at 299,800 yuan, equivalent to approximately $44,950 at current exchange rates. The automatic-transmission version costs 309,800 yuan, or about $46,450.
For comparison, the regular 2027 Subaru BRZ starts at $36,140 in the United States, excluding destination charges.
It remains unclear whether Subaru will offer an equivalent 60th Anniversary Edition in the U.S. market.
Could the BRZ Series.Yellow Be an Alternative?
For U.S. buyers seeking a more exclusive BRZ, the 2026 BRZ Series.Yellow could be the closest alternative. Based on the BRZ tS, the special model is limited to 350 units.
The Series.Yellow features exclusive Sunrise Yellow paint and STI performance upgrades, giving it distinctive styling and performance-focused equipment within the BRZ lineup.
Although the BRZ 60th Anniversary Edition is exclusive to China, the limited-production model celebrates Subaru’s six-decade boxer-engine legacy with distinctive styling, chassis enhancements and additional technology.
