The 2028 Mitsubishi Outlander Diamond Trail Edition will make its world debut at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas from November 3-6, marking Mitsubishi Motors’ return to the event for the first time since 2012. Rather than unveiling a radical custom build, the Japanese automaker is introducing a production model designed to deliver greater off-road capability and appeal to adventure-focused SUV buyers.

The Diamond Trail Edition is the most rugged version of Mitsubishi’s core SUV offering to date. It combines upgrades to the vehicle’s exterior, interior and all-wheel-drive systems, positioning it as what Mitsubishi describes as “the most capable and adventure-focused Outlander ever offered in North America.”

2028 Mitsubishi Outlander Adds a New Rock Mode

One of the most significant upgrades is a new Rock mode for the Outlander’s standard Super-All Wheel Control System (S-AWC). The setting is designed to improve performance on challenging terrain by using enhanced brake control to suppress wheel slip quickly and help maintain traction.

According to Mitsubishi, Rock mode activates faster than the system’s other driving modes. Selecting it also automatically engages Hill Descent Control (HDC), helping drivers manage vehicle speed on rocky surfaces and uneven terrain. The HDC system allows drivers to adjust the speed at which the vehicle maintains control during descents.

The Diamond Trail Edition also introduces a new instrument-cluster display that shows the front-wheel steering angle, individual wheel slip and traction-control intervention. These details give drivers additional information about the vehicle’s behavior when navigating difficult surfaces.

The Multi-View Camera System receives an improvement as well. When activated, it remains operational at speeds of up to 18.6 mph, an increase of 6.2 mph compared with the standard model.

Redesigned Bumpers Improve Off-Road Angles

The 2028 Outlander Diamond Trail Edition features redesigned bumpers that improve its approach and departure angles. The approach angle increases from 18.3 to 20.5 degrees, while the departure angle rises from 22.2 to 23.1 degrees.

The updated bumpers complement aggressive over-fenders and unique 18×7.5-inch black alloy wheels fitted with dedicated Nexen Roadian ATX all-terrain tires. Together, these changes give the SUV a more rugged appearance suited to its off-road focus.

Additional exterior changes include a matte black grille, a black Dynamic Shield design and black-finished headlights. Two round projector lights mounted on the front bumper provide another distinctive feature, while raised roof rails make it easier to install roof racks.

Mitsubishi is also introducing Trail Green Metallic as a new exterior color for the Diamond Trail Edition. Buyers can pair the finish with a white roof for a contrasting two-tone appearance.

Interior Gets Water-Repellent Seating Material

Inside, the Outlander Diamond Trail Edition features new dark gray seating material with khaki stitching. Exclusive to this variant, the material is designed to repel water and make cleaning easier, an update intended to suit the needs of an adventure-oriented vehicle.

The cabin follows a coordinated design theme with matte and dark finishes. Textured matte black, dark chrome and dark satin elements contribute to the interior’s appearance.

The Diamond Trail Edition logo also appears throughout the cabin, including on the seat backs, floor mats and door trim. The logo represents skilled athletes on a downhill course.

Mitsubishi Plans More Off-Road-Focused Vehicles for North America

The Diamond Trail Edition is part of Mitsubishi’s broader plans to expand its lineup of off-road-capable vehicles in North America. The company’s Momentum 2030 long-term business plan identifies the 2028 Outlander Diamond Trail Edition as the first model in a new generation of vehicles focused on adventure and capability.

Future models are expected to emphasize adventure and vehicle capability while building on Mitsubishi’s history of quality, dependability and reliability. However, the automaker has not confirmed whether the all-new Montero/Pajero body-on-frame SUV will be introduced in the United States.

Three Outlander Diamond Trail Models to Appear at SEMA

Mitsubishi will showcase three Outlander Diamond Trail models at the SEMA Show. One will remain in stock form apart from Mitsubishi Genuine Accessories and a color-matched Thule roof box.

The other two vehicles will feature extensive modifications, giving attendees additional examples of the Diamond Trail Edition’s potential for customization.

The debut marks Mitsubishi’s return to SEMA with a production vehicle and introduces an Outlander variant equipped with off-road-focused mechanical, exterior and interior upgrades as the company outlines its plans for a new generation of adventure-oriented vehicles in North America.
