Honda wants TrailSport to become more than a styling package, with future models set to receive meaningful engineering upgrades designed to improve their off-road capabilities. The shift is expected to begin with the 2027 Honda Passport TrailSport, as the automaker’s team pushes for hardware that makes its rugged SUVs more capable beyond paved roads.
Since the first TrailSport model debuted with the Passport in 2021, Honda has expanded the badge across more vehicles, adding features such as chunkier tires, rugged exterior trim and outdoor-inspired colors. However, the company’s approach is now moving toward improvements that go beyond appearance.
Honda TrailSport Is Moving Beyond Cosmetic Changes
Honda’s TrailSport team believes the era of simply adding rugged-looking accessories to vehicles is coming to an end. Instead, future models are expected to benefit from engineering changes designed to make them more effective on challenging terrain.
The 2027 Passport TrailSport is leading this effort. Rather than relying primarily on visual enhancements, Honda is looking to develop vehicles with practical off-road capabilities.
Building a capable off-roader requires more than larger tires and protective exterior components. Suspension geometry, ground clearance, traction systems, recovery equipment and the software controlling these systems all play important roles in determining how a vehicle performs on difficult terrain.
Honda’s TrailSport Team Brings Off-Road Experience
The push for more capable TrailSport models is being driven by a group of Honda engineers and product planners with firsthand off-roading experience. Some team members own collections of classic off-road vehicles, including heavily modified models.
Several team members also hold certifications from the International Four Wheel Drive Training Association. Their experience includes driving on trails across North America and Japan.
This practical knowledge is helping shape the team’s approach to future TrailSport vehicles. The challenge now includes persuading Honda’s executives in Japan that investing in more substantial off-road hardware could strengthen the brand, particularly in the United States, where trail-ready SUVs have an established following.
Hybrid Power Could Support Future TrailSport Models
Electrification could become another part of Honda’s off-road strategy. The automaker is developing a V6-based hybrid system for its larger vehicles, potentially bringing electric power that could be useful in demanding driving situations.
Electric power could provide instant torque when a vehicle needs to climb over rocks or navigate a steep hill. Such capability could complement the mechanical upgrades Honda is pursuing for its future TrailSport lineup.
Honda CR-V and Ridgeline Could Get TrailSport Upgrades
The next-generation Honda CR-V, which will likely be revealed next year, is expected to receive more rugged TrailSport enhancements. The Ridgeline is also anticipated to get a new version in 2028.
Honda could use suspension components from the Passport in these vehicles, following the automaker’s established approach of sharing parts across its lineup.
The Pilot could also receive similar treatment, although Honda has not confirmed plans for that model. Acura, Honda’s premium brand, could also benefit from the broader move toward rugged vehicles after recently confirming plans to introduce a rugged model.
Honda-Branded Pickup Could Expand the Strategy
Honda is also working with Mitsubishi on a Honda-branded pickup based on the Mitsubishi Triton’s ladder frame. Sales are scheduled to begin in ASEAN markets in 2028.
The project could give Honda a dedicated pickup in a region where traditional body-on-frame trucks remain popular. However, no TrailSport version of the upcoming pickup has been announced.
Honda’s plans point toward a broader effort to give TrailSport models genuine off-road capability rather than relying on rugged styling alone. The 2027 Passport TrailSport is expected to lead the transition, while potential upgrades for other Honda vehicles remain unconfirmed.
