GM Hybrid Cars Could Arrive in 2027 as EV Sales Slow

General Motors plans to introduce new hybrid models as early as 2027, marking a shift in its electrification strategy as electric vehicle sales face challenges in the U.S. market. Although the automaker has not identified which vehicles will receive hybrid powertrains, a major investment at its Lansing Delta Township Assembly plant in Michigan could offer clues about its future lineup.

GM’s Hybrid Plans Could Include Three Popular SUVs

While automakers such as Ford and Toyota have expanded their hybrid offerings, General Motors has remained committed to its electric vehicle program. As a result, the Chevrolet Corvette is currently GM’s only hybrid nameplate in the U.S.

However, changing market conditions have prompted GM to announce plans for new hybrid models beginning as early as 2027. The company has not disclosed which vehicles will be the first to combine combustion engines with electric motors.

A recent announcement about future hybrid production at Lansing Delta Township Assembly could provide some insight. The investment is part of a broader commitment to the Lansing region that is expected to exceed $2 billion over the next several years.

The Michigan facility currently produces the Buick Enclave, Chevrolet Traverse and GMC Acadia. All three SUVs share GM’s C1 platform, potentially making it easier for the automaker to introduce hybrid powertrains across the lineup.

However, GM has not confirmed whether any of these vehicles will receive hybrid technology, and the possibility remains speculative.

Why GM Is Turning More Attention to Hybrids

Conventional hybrids are gaining ground in the U.S. market. Hybrids accounted for 16% of new U.S. light-duty vehicle sales in the third quarter of 2026, compared with 6% for electric vehicles.

That difference could make hybrids an important part of GM’s efforts to respond to changing consumer demand. The automaker recorded strong truck sales in Q3 2026, but its overall sales declined by 5.5%, largely because of falling EV sales and discontinued models.

The investment in Lansing Delta Township Assembly involves restructuring a previously awarded Domestic Manufacturing Conversion Grant. The move is expected to help establish GM’s modern hybrid lineup, although the company has not announced specific models or production timelines beyond its broader plans to introduce hybrids as early as 2027.

Lansing Plants Remain Important to GM’s Future

Lansing Delta Township Assembly produced a record of over 291,000 vehicles in 2025. The facility is also marking its 20th anniversary this year, adding to its significance as GM prepares for future hybrid production.

The broader investment also includes Lansing Grand River Assembly, another Michigan facility being prepared for future vehicle production, including the next-generation Cadillac CT5.

The plans indicate that combustion-engine vehicles will remain part of GM’s product strategy. However, the next-generation CT5 reportedly will not arrive until 2028, potentially leaving Lansing Grand River facing a period of reduced production or downtime in the meantime.

GM Will Continue Offering Electric Vehicles

GM’s move toward hybrids does not mean the automaker is abandoning electric vehicles. Despite recording $11.2 billion in EV-related restructuring charges since the second half of 2025, the company plans to continue offering models such as the Chevrolet Equinox EV and GMC Sierra EV.

An all-electric version of the Chevrolet Corvette also remains part of GM’s plans, although it is not expected to arrive anytime soon.

GM Faces Competition From Established Hybrid Rivals

Expanding its hybrid lineup could help GM respond to demand among American buyers as competitors continue to build on their hybrid offerings.

Toyota and Hyundai are experiencing growing hybrid sales, while Ford offers models such as the F-150 with its PowerBoost system and the Maverick Hybrid.

With new hybrid models planned as early as 2027, GM is preparing to broaden its electrification strategy while maintaining its electric vehicle offerings and continuing to invest in future vehicle production across its Lansing facilities.
