BYD vehicles have been banned from entering Kadena Air Base in Okinawa, Japan, amid U.S. military security concerns over the potential risks posed by Chinese-made cars. The restriction applies to privately owned vehicles, taxis and delivery vehicles, with security personnel instructed to turn away BYD drivers at the gates.

BYD, a Chinese automaker that has expanded its operations globally, has also appeared on the Pentagon’s list of companies it considers linked to the Chinese military. The latest restrictions come as concerns grow over U.S. military personnel stationed overseas driving vehicles manufactured by the company.

U.S. Military Tightens Restrictions on BYD Vehicles

Kadena Air Base is one of America’s largest overseas military installations. Located in Okinawa, Japan, the base introduced the BYD vehicle ban this week as part of measures addressing security concerns.

Under the restrictions, security personnel stationed at the base’s entrances have been instructed to prevent BYD vehicles from entering and require their drivers to turn around. The policy covers both privately owned cars and vehicles used for taxi and delivery services.

Lieutenant Colonel Alli Stormer, a spokesperson for the U.S. Air Force 18th Wing at Kadena, described the vehicles as a security concern.

“These vehicles present an unacceptable and unmitigable risk to our personnel and our mission,” Stormer said.

The base would play a direct role in responding to a crisis involving China. It also houses a Typhon missile system reportedly capable of firing Tomahawk missiles with a range close to a thousand miles, placing parts of China and Russia within striking distance.

Why BYD Cars Are Raising Military Security Concerns

No specific threat involving BYD vehicles has been identified in the report. However, the potential security risks associated with modern vehicles have become a concern because of the technology they contain.

Cars equipped with cameras, sensors, computer-operated systems and wireless internet access could present security challenges when operating inside sensitive military installations. A base such as Kadena contains equipment and infrastructure that make the presence of connected vehicles a potential concern.

There is currently no evidence presented in the report that governments have used cars to spy on other governments. Nevertheless, the combination of onboard technology and wireless connectivity raises questions about how vehicles could potentially be used for surveillance.

U.S. Restrictions on Chinese Technology

The U.S. Defense Department has already prohibited the sale and use of smartphones from Chinese companies Huawei and ZTE. Modern cars increasingly incorporate technologies that make them comparable to smartphones on wheels, adding another dimension to concerns about connected devices and national security.

The restrictions at Kadena Air Base highlight the security concerns surrounding BYD vehicles at a strategically important U.S. military installation in Japan, with the ban extending to privately owned cars, taxis and delivery vehicles.
