A classic Toyota Land Cruiser 80-Series has received a major performance upgrade with a marine diesel engine that doubles its factory horsepower and cuts its 0-to-60 mph time nearly in half. The unusual swap uses a Yanmar engine closely related to the original Toyota powerplant, delivering a significant boost while preserving the truck’s rugged character.

Yanmar Marine Engine Delivers 320 Horsepower

The 80-Series Toyota Land Cruiser is known for its capabilities, but speed has never been one of its strongest attributes, particularly among the diesel versions sold outside the U.S.

The project replaces the factory engine with a Yanmar 6LP marine diesel, closely related to the 1HD-FT 4.2-liter turbocharged inline-six briefly offered in the Land Cruiser.

Yanmar, a Japanese heavy-equipment manufacturer specializing in diesel engines and construction equipment, developed the 6LP as a marine version of Toyota’s original powerplant.

Although the Land Cruiser already came equipped with a 4.2-liter turbocharged inline-six diesel, the original engine used 12 valves. The Yanmar replacement features 24 valves, helping it produce 320 horsepower, approximately twice the output of the factory 12-valve engine.

Land Cruiser’s Acceleration Improves Dramatically

The engine swap reduces the truck’s 0-to-60 mph acceleration time from 16 seconds to 8.8 seconds, making it considerably quicker than its original configuration.

The performance improvement comes despite retaining the stock air intake, which is known to restrict power in these engines.

Modifications Make the Marine Diesel Fit

Although the Yanmar engine shares its basic design with the original Land Cruiser diesel, several modifications were necessary to adapt the marine powerplant for road use.

The seawater cooling pump used in boats was removed, and a standard Toyota cooling system was installed. The Yanmar oil sump and pickup were also replaced with Toyota components to provide the necessary clearance.

The injector pump was changed as well because the Yanmar version lacks a threaded boss needed to connect a tachometer.

Toyota Manual Transmission Keeps RPMs Low

The marine diesel is paired with a Toyota H152 gearbox, a higher-ratio version of the five-speed manual transmission originally fitted to the Land Cruiser.

The transmission allows the truck to maintain 60 mph at just 1,600 rpm, helping it cruise at highway speeds with relatively low engine revolutions.

The rest of the vehicle also received extensive attention, including a rebuilt front axle, repairs to corrosion and electrical problems, and installation of a new exhaust system.

Classic Land Cruiser Gets a Thorough Restoration

The vehicle reportedly traveled 200,000 miles under the care of its original owner before receiving the engine upgrade and other repairs.

With its 320-horsepower Yanmar diesel, upgraded transmission and extensive mechanical work, the 80-Series Land Cruiser appears ready for another 200,000 miles of service.
