The Jeep Wrangler could be heading toward a major mechanical change, with Stellantis considering independent front suspension as an option for future production models. The discussion follows the debut of the new Wrangler Scrambler SRT Concept at SEMA 2026 in Las Vegas, marking the first time a Jeep Wrangler has featured independent front suspension.

Although the Scrambler SRT remains a concept, Tim Kuniskis, Head of American Brands for Stellantis, has raised the possibility of offering this suspension configuration to regular Wrangler customers. The proposal would give buyers a choice between independent front suspension and the traditional solid front axle that has defined the Wrangler for decades.

Jeep Considers Two Suspension Options for the Wrangler

Stellantis is not necessarily looking to replace the Wrangler’s traditional solid front axle. Instead, the company could offer two suspension configurations, allowing customers to choose the setup that best suits their driving needs.

During his presentation at SEMA 2026, Kuniskis discussed whether independent front suspension should remain exclusive to the SRT version or become an option for all Wrangler customers.

He emphasized that the proposal was not about abandoning the traditional solid axle.

“Before I start getting the hate mail, I’m not asking you to give that up, I’m asking you can you have both,” Kuniskis said.

He also acknowledged that the company had not yet decided whether to extend the configuration across the Wrangler lineup.

“The bigger question is, do we leave this only for SRT, or do we make this an option for all Wrangler customers? I don’t know the answer. But I’m pretty sure in the next two or three days we are going to find out because we are going to get flooded with love mail and hate mail, and we are going to have to figure out where the tide breaks,” he added.

Independent Front Suspension vs. Solid Axle

Independent front suspension allows each wheel to move separately, providing better steering, stability, and control when driving at higher speeds over rough terrain.

The traditional solid front axle, meanwhile, remains well suited to rock crawling because of its flexibility and rugged construction.

Offering both configurations would allow Jeep to serve different types of Wrangler owners without requiring traditional off-road enthusiasts to abandon the suspension system they prefer.

How the Jeep Wrangler Could Compete With the Ford Bronco

The suspension discussion also highlights the long-standing competition between the Jeep Wrangler and Ford Bronco.

When Ford revived the Bronco, it introduced independent front suspension paired with a solid rear axle. This configuration gave the SUV a more modern driving character, particularly on paved roads and faster off-road sections.

The Wrangler, by comparison, retained solid axles at both ends, staying closer to its traditional off-road formula.

This difference has helped distinguish the two SUVs while giving the Bronco an advantage in certain driving situations.

Introducing independent front suspension as an option could help Jeep address some of those differences without sacrificing the traditional configuration that many Wrangler buyers appreciate.

Will the Jeep Wrangler Get Independent Front Suspension?

Under the proposed approach, drivers who regularly tackle rock-crawling trails could continue choosing the solid front axle. Customers who prefer desert trails and faster off-road driving could instead select independent front suspension.

Stellantis has not officially confirmed whether the technology will become available on production Wranglers. For now, the Wrangler Scrambler SRT Concept remains a concept, while the company’s leadership is considering whether both suspension configurations should be offered to customers.
