The Nissan Pathfinder is celebrating its 40th anniversary with two radically modified R51 models unveiled at the 2026 SEMA Show. The ambitious project transforms the older SUVs into two completely different machines, combining modern Nissan Frontier bodywork with either track-focused performance or serious off-road capabilities.

Rather than relying on conventional aftermarket accessories, the project involved extensive custom fabrication. Both Pathfinders received the complete front clip, core support, and front doors from the modern 2027 Nissan Frontier, creating a unique combination of different Nissan generations.

Two Nissan Pathfinder Builds Feature Custom Frontier Bodywork

Integrating the Frontier components into the older Pathfinder bodies required significant modifications. The fabrication team trimmed the A-pillars and cut the rear doors in half to blend the different design elements into a cohesive appearance.

Both vehicles also feature Ruby Slate Pearl paint, a distinctive color originally reserved for the 2021 Maxima anniversary edition.

The two builds demonstrate different directions for the R51 Pathfinder platform, with one engineered for track performance and the other developed for demanding off-road adventures.

Trackfinder: Supercharged V6 Power and 501 Wheel Horsepower

The Trackfinder is the street-focused version, designed to deliver serious performance during track days. It features a supercharged VQ40 V6 engine producing 501 wheel horsepower, paired with a six-speed manual transmission taken from an older Xterra.

The SUV rides on a custom coilover suspension that gives it a lowered stance. Its equipment includes 20-inch forged wheels, massive Z1 big brakes, and a functional quad exhaust system.

The combination of supercharged power, manual transmission, and extensive chassis modifications gives the Trackfinder a completely different character from the traditional Pathfinder.

Trailfinder: V8 Power and 35-Inch Off-Road Tires

The Trailfinder takes the opposite approach, focusing on off-road performance while retaining the Pathfinder’s traditional SUV character.

Under the hood, it features a factory VK56 V8 engine paired with a heavy-duty Titan suspension swap. The setup includes 35-inch Hankook mud tires mounted on rugged 17-inch steel wheels.

Custom throwback graphics complete the exterior, drawing inspiration from the nostalgia surrounding Nissan’s recent retro design packages. The result combines substantial off-road hardware with a distinctive vintage appearance.

What the Two Nissan Pathfinder Builds Demonstrate

Creating two completely different vehicles from the same R51 Pathfinder platform highlights the possibilities offered by the older SUV. The extensive fabrication work also combines design elements from three different eras of Nissan trucks into a single cohesive project.

While overseas markets currently benefit from sleek, modern crossover designs, these twin builds demonstrate the potential of the older body-on-frame American SUV platform as a foundation for ambitious enthusiast projects.

Nissan’s Future Strategy Could Target Two Different Buyers

Industry rumors suggest Nissan could eventually divide its passenger vehicle lineup into two distinct models by the end of the decade.

The reported strategy aims to serve street-focused crossover buyers and traditional off-road enthusiasts separately, without compromising either segment.

With a supercharged V6-powered Trackfinder featuring a manual transmission and a V8-powered Trailfinder equipped for off-road driving, the two Nissan Pathfinder builds present dramatically different interpretations of the same SUV.
