The Volkswagen Golf R Black Edition II has debuted in Japan as a limited-edition model that combines exclusive styling with factory-installed performance upgrades. Limited to 500 units, the special edition includes an Akrapovic titanium exhaust system and the Performance Pack while carrying a price that is lower than the U.S. version of the Golf R.
Limited-Edition Golf R Brings Exclusive Upgrades
Volkswagen Japan has introduced the Golf R Black Edition II with gloss-black exterior accents and unique interior touches. Beyond the cosmetic changes, the model adds several performance-focused features that distinguish it from the standard Golf R.
Production will be limited to 500 examples.
Akrapovic Exhaust and Performance Pack Included
The Golf R Black Edition II comes equipped with a full Akrapovic titanium exhaust system featuring active valves. The system allows for quieter operation when desired while providing a louder exhaust note under heavier throttle. It is also lighter than the standard exhaust, offering weight savings.
Volkswagen also includes the Performance Pack at no additional cost. Comparable to the Euro Style Package offered in North America, it adds a larger rear wing, 19-inch forged alloy wheels, and larger cross-drilled brakes.
The package also introduces a performance telemetry display in the infotainment system, along with Drift Mode and Special Mode. In addition, the top-speed limiter increases from 155 mph to 168 mph.
Priced Below the U.S. Golf R
The Golf R Black Edition II is priced at ¥7,899,000, or approximately $48,550 at current exchange rates.
By comparison, the Golf R starts at $49,455 in the United States, and that price does not include the Euro Style Package. Adding that package brings the total to just under $55,000.
The Golf R Continues as Volkswagen’s Performance Flagship
While the GTI remains Volkswagen’s best-known hot hatch, the Golf R offers additional performance through its more powerful engine and all-wheel-drive system.
The hatchback is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine producing 328 horsepower. Combined with its drivetrain, differentials, and electronic systems, the Golf R delivers high-performance capability while maintaining a subtle exterior appearance.
Volkswagen also offers the Golf R as a wagon, although that version is not available in North America.
Limited Production Highlights the Special Edition
With exclusive styling, factory-installed performance upgrades, and a lower price than the U.S.-market Golf R, the limited-production Black Edition II expands Volkswagen Japan’s lineup with a model that combines added equipment and performance enhancements in a package restricted to 500 units.
