The Ford Mustang dominated the non-premium sports car market during the first half of 2026, selling more vehicles than all of its rivals in the segment combined. Ford reported that Mustang sales reached 28,725 units in H1 2026, marking a significant lead over competing models while posting year-over-year growth.
Ford Mustang Posts Dominant First-Half Sales Performance
Ford sold 28,725 Mustang models during the first half of 2026, more than seven times the sales of its closest competitor, the Toyota GR86, which recorded 4,007 units over the same period.
Other vehicles competing in the non-premium sports car segment include the Mazda MX-5 Miata and the Subaru BRZ, the GR86’s sibling model, which has long struggled for sales in the United States.
According to Ford, the Mustang’s performance represents the first time since 2008 that the model has outsold the entire non-premium sports car segment combined. The Mustang also captured nearly 59% of the segment during the first half of the year.
Mustang Sales Rise Despite Challenging Market Conditions
Sports cars continue to face weaker demand as buyers increasingly favor crossovers and SUVs, which offer greater practicality and everyday usability.
Reports have also suggested that the Chevrolet Camaro, which was discontinued after the 2024 model year, could return with a four-door body style in an effort to strengthen its business case.
Despite those broader market trends, Mustang sales increased 22% in H1 2026 compared with the same period last year.
Ford Continues to Expand the Mustang Lineup
Ford’s press release did not explain the specific reasons behind the Mustang’s sales performance. However, the automaker’s continued investment in the current S650 generation may provide some insight.
The Mustang remains available with a relatively affordable EcoBoost model, while customers seeking higher performance can choose the GT or the Dark Horse.
Ford has also positioned the Mustang in flagship-performance territory with the Mustang GTD instead of introducing a direct successor to the Ford GT.
On the racing circuit, the Mustang competes in the FIA World Endurance Championship, where it races against models such as the Ferrari 296 LMGT3 Evo.
2026 Ford Mustang Pricing

- Mustang EcoBoost (2.3-liter): $32,995
- Mustang GT (5.0-liter V8): $46,800
- Dark Horse SC (5.2-liter supercharged V8): $106,090
Ford Reports Broader Sales Highlights
Ford sold a total of 1,006,515 vehicles during the first half of 2026.
Additional company highlights included the Explorer remaining America’s best-selling three-row SUV, the F-Series leading the truck segment while outselling its nearest competitor by more than 80,000 units, and the Bronco outselling the Jeep Wrangler during the second quarter of 2026.
The Mustang’s first-half performance stands out as one of Ford’s strongest sales achievements of 2026, with the iconic sports car leading its segment by a wide margin while contributing to the automaker’s broader sales results.
