The BMW iX3 continues to stand out for its driving range, with the global model already exceeding official expectations in independent testing. Now, newly published specifications in China list an even higher range for the Chinese-market version, although the figures are based on a different testing cycle.
BMW iX3 Surpasses EPA Estimate in Independent Test
The BMW iX3 has earned a reputation for strong efficiency, combining large battery capacity with low energy consumption.
According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the BMW iX3 50 xDrive delivers up to 434 miles on a full charge. An independent real-world test, however, recorded 485 miles, exceeding the official EPA estimate.
The results highlight the vehicle’s efficiency and support BMW’s approach to electric vehicle development.
China Receives a Market-Specific BMW iX3
The Chinese version of the BMW iX3 shares the same overall design and vehicle architecture as the global model but includes several changes tailored to local preferences.
The vehicle features a longer body to provide additional rear-seat legroom, conventional door handles, and a dedicated infotainment system designed specifically for the Chinese market.
Powertrain Remains Identical to the Global Model
Despite the market-specific design changes, the BMW iX3 50L xDrive sold in China uses the same powertrain offered globally.
The dual-motor system produces 469 horsepower and 476 lb-ft of torque, delivering power to all four wheels. The vehicle also uses an 800-volt architecture, allowing it to recover approximately 250 miles of driving range after 10 minutes of charging.
The battery pack is rated at 108 kWh.
Chinese Certification Lists Up to 571 Miles of Range
Before vehicles go on sale in China, manufacturers are required to submit performance specifications to the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT).
According to the published MIIT figures, the BMW iX3 50L xDrive has a certified driving range of 919 kilometers, along with an energy consumption rating of 13.6 kWh per 100 kilometers.
Converted to imperial measurements, those figures equal approximately 571 miles of driving range and 154 MPGe. By comparison, the U.S.-specification model carries an EPA rating of 434 miles and up to 105 MPGe.
Testing Standards Explain the Difference
The higher Chinese range figures reflect the country’s testing methodology rather than differences in the vehicle itself.
While the vehicles are tested, the Chinese testing cycle represents ideal operating conditions and produces results that are generally more optimistic than EPA ratings. As a result, those figures can be difficult to reproduce during everyday driving.
Even so, the published specifications underscore the BMW iX3’s emphasis on efficiency. Although the Chinese model shares the same core mechanical specifications as the global version, it also introduces market-specific features such as conventional door handles and a dedicated infotainment system.
