A rare Mercedes-Benz 500 GE V8 AMG has sold for $143,000 at an RM Sotheby’s auction, highlighting continued interest in one of the most limited and distinctive versions of the iconic G-Class. The vehicle is one of just 446 examples produced and features factory-requested customizations ordered by its original owner, Saudi Prince Sultan Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud.
Limited-Production Mercedes-Benz G-Class Draws Strong Auction Result
Mercedes-Benz has built vehicles for more than a century, producing numerous models that have become highly regarded among enthusiasts. Among them, the G-Class stands out as the brand’s most recognizable icon, retaining its signature design and core characteristics over the decades while continuing to attract strong demand.
Older G-Class models have also gained value in the classic car market, and one of the rarest versions has now changed hands at auction.
One of Only 446 Mercedes-Benz 500 GE V8 AMG Models
In the 1990s, Mercedes-Benz and AMG were separate companies that collaborated on high-performance vehicles. In 1993, they introduced the limited-production Mercedes-Benz 500 GE V8 AMG, with only 446 units built.
The model marked the first G-Class equipped with an AMG-tuned engine and carried an official output rating of 237 horsepower.
One example recently sold through RM Sotheby’s for $143,000. The vehicle is chassis number 1669 and was completed on July 28, 1993. It was officially registered in February 1994, when it was delivered to Saudi Crown Prince Sultan Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud.
Factory Customizations Made This G-Class Even Rarer
Although already part of a limited production run, the vehicle received several factory-requested modifications from its original owner that made it even more distinctive.
According to the car’s official records, it was finished in Avantgarde Green paint, listed as a special factory add-on. The vehicle also received larger fender flares and a wider track as part of its customized specification.
Comprehensive Restoration Completed in 2025
In 2025, the Mercedes-Benz 500 GE V8 AMG underwent a comprehensive rework by Obsessive Car Workshop, a workshop based in Jeddah.
The work focused primarily on the brake fluid, a front axle oil leak, the climate control system, the fuel pump, and the differential.
The combination of its limited production, documented factory customizations, royal ownership history, and recent mechanical refurbishment contributed to the vehicle’s distinction as it sold for $143,000 at RM Sotheby’s.
