The Wuling Cloud EV is drawing comparisons to one of the automotive world’s most recognizable designs—the original Fiat Multipla. While it is not a direct replica, its distinctive proportions and practical one-box layout have sparked renewed discussion about whether the unconventional styling that once defined the Multipla has found a modern electric successor.
The Fiat Multipla’s Distinctive Design Lives On
Automotive styling has always been subjective, but the original Fiat Multipla remains one of the most polarizing vehicle designs ever produced. Alongside models such as the Pontiac Aztek and SsangYong Rodius, it is frequently cited in discussions about unconventional automotive styling.
When Fiat introduced the Multipla in 1998, its tall greenhouse, short front end, rounded body and distinctive second row of “eyebrow” headlights immediately set it apart. Over time, that unusual appearance helped turn the vehicle into a lasting automotive icon.
Wuling Cloud EV Shows Familiar Styling Cues
The resemblance became apparent after the Wuling Cloud EV was spotted on the streets of Indonesia. Although not a copy of the Fiat Multipla, several design elements create a striking visual similarity.
The Cloud EV features a rounded, almost egg-shaped profile with a tall roofline, compact hood and expansive glass area designed to maximize cabin space. At the front, slim LED daytime running lights stretch across the nose, while the primary headlights are positioned lower in the bumper, creating a split-light arrangement reminiscent of the Multipla.
Viewed from the side, the similarities continue with a rounded body, nearly upright tailgate, smooth body panels and a spacious cabin built around a one-box design. Aerodynamic wheels and flush-mounted door handles reinforce its minimalist electric vehicle styling while maintaining its emphasis on practicality.
Unlike the Fiat, however, the Wuling Cloud EV presents a more refined appearance. Clean body lines, blacked-out pillars and subtle exterior detailing give it a more contemporary look despite its unconventional proportions.
Designed to Prioritize Interior Space
Beyond its distinctive exterior, the Wuling Cloud EV is designed as a practical family vehicle. It rides on a 106.3-inch wheelbase while measuring 169.1 inches in overall length, with an emphasis on maximizing passenger space.
The interior includes a 15.6-inch infotainment display, a digital instrument cluster and lounge-style seating. The rear bench can recline up to 135 degrees, further emphasizing passenger comfort.
Electric Powertrain and Driving Range
The Wuling Cloud EV is powered by a front-mounted electric motor producing 134 horsepower and 148 lb-ft of torque. Energy comes from a 50.6-kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery mounted beneath the floor.
According to Wuling, the vehicle delivers up to 286 miles of driving range under the CLTC testing cycle. DC fast charging can replenish the battery from 30% to 80% in approximately 30 minutes.
Built Through a GM-Backed Joint Venture
The Wuling Cloud EV is produced by SAIC-GM-Wuling, a joint venture involving SAIC Motor, General Motors and Liuzhou Wuling Motors. While Wuling operates its own brand, General Motors has long participated in the partnership, particularly in the development of affordable electric vehicles.
The collaboration has already expanded beyond China. Earlier this year, General Motors rebadged the Wuling Baojun Yep Plus as the Chevrolet Spark EUV for markets including Brazil, reflecting the growing use of joint-venture vehicles under the Chevrolet brand outside China.
The Wuling Cloud EV has not received Chevrolet branding. Even so, its design demonstrates that distinctive family-car styling continues to evolve in the electric vehicle era while maintaining a strong focus on practicality and interior space.
