The 2027 Mercedes-Benz GLA is set to make its world debut this week, marking the arrival of the third generation of one of the brand’s longest-running subcompact models. As the GLA enters its sixth year in production, Mercedes-Benz is preparing to update the crossover following recent redesigns of the CLA and GLB.
One of Mercedes-Benz’s Oldest Subcompact Models
The current-generation GLA was unveiled in 2019 for the 2020 model year and has remained in production ever since. Within Mercedes-Benz’s subcompact lineup, it is now among the oldest models on sale.
In recent years, both the CLA and GLB received comprehensive model changes. The CLA has been well received, while the GLB has made a positive impression in Europe. The upcoming GLA redesign is expected to continue that momentum.
Evolutionary Design Expected for the New GLA
Mercedes-Benz has only released teaser images showing the crossover covered by draped camouflage. Even so, the vehicle appears to retain proportions similar to the outgoing model.
The 2027 GLA still appears to feature a compact footprint, while its roofline looks largely unchanged from the current version. Based on the available preview, Mercedes-Benz appears to be taking an evolutionary approach rather than introducing a dramatic redesign.
A similar strategy was used for the latest CLA and GLB, both of which maintained the overall shape of their predecessors. Current Mercedes-Benz design trends also suggest the new GLA could feature the brand’s three-pointed daytime running lights and taillights, along with a wide front grille.
Hybrid and Electric Powertrains Likely
Mercedes-Benz has not disclosed powertrain details for the new model. However, the 2027 GLA is expected to share its platform with the recently updated CLA and GLB.
If that proves to be the case, the crossover could be offered with both hybrid and electric powertrains similar to those available in Mercedes-Benz’s other subcompact vehicles.
The hybrid models could use a turbocharged 1.5-liter Miller Cycle engine paired with a single electric motor and a 1.3-kWh battery. Potential variants include the GLA 180, GLA 200 and GLA 220, producing 156 horsepower, 184 horsepower and 211 horsepower, respectively.
Electric Variants May Mirror the GLB Lineup
The electric versions could be offered with two battery sizes and two power-output configurations.
If Mercedes-Benz follows the same strategy used for the GLB, the electric GLA could be available in 250+ and 350 4Matic variants.
Potential U.S. Model Lineup
While European buyers are expected to receive a broad range of trims and configurations, the lineup offered in the United States may be more streamlined.
According to expectations outlined for the North American market, the GLA 220 could be the sole hybrid model offered in the U.S., similar to the strategy used for the CLA 220.
For electric models, both the 250+ and 350 4Matic variants could potentially be offered to American buyers.
Official Reveal Scheduled This Week
Mercedes-Benz is expected to provide complete details on the new crossover when the 2027 GLA makes its world premiere on July 29.
The unveiling will complete the latest round of updates to the automaker’s subcompact lineup following the recent launches of the redesigned CLA and GLB.
