The Lexus RX, America’s best-selling midsize luxury crossover, could receive a significant mid-cycle update sooner than expected. According to a report from Japan, Lexus is preparing to introduce a refreshed version of the current-generation RX, with a debut expected either by the end of this year or during the first quarter of 2027.
Lexus RX Continues to Lead the Luxury Crossover Segment
The Lexus RX has consistently outsold rivals such as the BMW X5 and Mercedes-Benz GLE for years. Lexus also holds the distinction of being the first automaker to introduce a luxury midsize crossover, helping establish the segment.
The current-generation RX was unveiled in 2022 for the 2023 model year and has continued the strong sales performance of its predecessor. As the model approaches its fourth model year, it is reaching the point where a mid-cycle refresh is expected.
Facelift Could Arrive Within the Next Year
Lexus has not released teaser images or officially confirmed the updated RX. However, Japanese publication MotorFan reports that the refreshed crossover could be revealed as early as the end of this year or as late as the first quarter of 2027.
The timing of the facelift could also provide an indication of when the next-generation RX will arrive. If the updated model reaches customers next year, the all-new RX could follow approximately three years later. If the facelift is introduced in 2027, the next-generation model could arrive in 2030.
Prototype Sightings Hint at Exterior Updates
Several prototypes of the updated Lexus RX have been spotted testing in Europe. The front bumper remains fully covered, while the headlights are visible, suggesting revisions focused primarily on the front-end design.
The refreshed RX may adopt styling elements from Lexus’ latest design language introduced with the new ES. While the crossover is not expected to fully adopt the grille-less appearance seen elsewhere in the lineup, it could incorporate design cues similar to those found on its sedan counterpart. The updated Lexus IS may also provide clues about the direction of the RX’s revised front fascia.
Interior May Receive More Noticeable Changes
While the exterior revisions may be relatively modest, the report suggests the cabin could receive more substantial updates.
The refreshed RX could borrow interior elements from the redesigned ES, including a new touchscreen display. Although the infotainment system is not expected to use the same software found in the latest ES, improvements to the user interface are anticipated.
A completely redesigned infotainment system remains possible, but the report suggests Lexus is more likely to reserve a larger technology overhaul for the next-generation RX.
Powertrains Expected to Remain Unchanged
According to the report, Lexus is expected to retain the current RX powertrain lineup as part of the upcoming facelift.
With the current generation approaching its fourth model year, the anticipated refresh is expected to keep the Lexus RX competitive while laying the groundwork for the eventual arrival of its next-generation successor.
