The Chevrolet Equinox EV, one of the most popular electric vehicles in the United States, is reportedly headed for a major redesign. According to GM Authority, citing sources familiar with the matter, General Motors is preparing a next-generation Equinox EV that could debut in late 2028 or early 2029 as a 2029 model.
Equinox EV Faces Growing Competition
The Chevrolet Equinox EV played a key role in helping General Motors rank second in U.S. electric vehicle sales last year, trailing only Tesla despite increasing competition across the EV market.
However, the model has recently faced stronger competition from rivals including the Toyota bZ and Hyundai Ioniq 5, both of which sold more units during the first half of this year.
Affordability Advantage Has Weakened
Introduced in 2024, the Equinox EV quickly became one of the most affordable electric vehicles available in the U.S.
Its pricing advantage narrowed after the expiration of the $7,500 federal EV tax credit last year. General Motors also brought back the Bolt EV, potentially attracting buyers seeking a lower-cost electric vehicle.
According to Cox Automotive, the Ford Mustang Mach-E outsold the Equinox EV during the second quarter of this year despite recording a 30.9% year-over-year sales decline. Over the same period, Equinox EV sales fell 61.8% year over year.
Next-Generation Model Could Introduce New EV Platform
GM Authority reports that the redesigned Equinox EV is expected to ride on General Motors’ new BEV-N architecture, an electric vehicle platform currently under development.
The BEV-N platform is expected to replace the existing BEV3 architecture, which currently underpins models including the Chevrolet Blazer EV and Cadillac Optiq.
The next-generation Equinox EV is expected to be the first model built on the new platform and could introduce improved capabilities over the current version.
Current 2026 Equinox EV Specifications
While details of the next-generation model remain unconfirmed, the 2026 Chevrolet Equinox EV currently carries a starting price of $34,995, excluding destination charges.
That pricing places it roughly in line with competitors such as the Toyota bZ and Hyundai Ioniq 5. The crossover also offers an EPA-estimated driving range of up to 319 miles on a full charge.
Production Plans Remain in Place
The Chevrolet Equinox EV is currently produced at General Motors’ Ramos Arizpe assembly plant in Mexico.
Meanwhile, production of the gasoline-powered Chevrolet Equinox is expected to expand to Fairfax Assembly in Kansas beginning in mid-2027.
Although General Motors has not officially announced the next-generation Equinox EV, the reported redesign signals continued investment in the model as competition intensifies across the U.S. electric vehicle market.
