Hennessey is building anticipation for Project Overlord, its upcoming hypercar, ahead of its scheduled reveal during the Monterey Car Week period. After first hinting at the vehicle in April, the company has intensified its teaser campaign, while founder John Hennessey has described the model as the “American [Porsche] Carrera GT,” signaling a major shift from the brand’s previous hypercars.
Project Overlord Points to a Fresh Design Direction
Last week, Hennessey officially introduced the new hypercar under the codename Project Overlord. The latest teaser follows an earlier video released in April and continues to reveal small styling details without showing the full vehicle.
The first teaser highlighted a nearly round taillight, while a newly shared Instagram clip reveals a headlight design that differs from those found on Venom F5-based hypercars. The updated styling suggests Project Overlord is unlikely to be closely tied to the Venom F5 platform.
Engine and Transmission Remain Unconfirmed
Some reports suggest Hennessey is developing an entirely new engine for Project Overlord. If that proves accurate, it could be a V10 similar to the Carrera GT, although the company has not confirmed those reports.
The teaser also raises questions about whether the new hypercar will move away from the 6.6-liter “Fury” twin-turbo V8 used across every Venom F5 model. Another possible shared feature with certain existing Hennessey vehicles could be a six-speed gated manual transmission, matching another hallmark of the Carrera GT.
For now, it remains unclear whether Project Overlord will feature a naturally aspirated, racecar-derived engine with a distinctive American character or take a different approach entirely.
Reveal Scheduled for August 3
Hennessey has scheduled the full unveiling of Project Overlord for August 3. It also remains unknown whether the hypercar is a one-off creation or the first model in a limited-production series. Based on the current teaser campaign, the company is expected to release at least one more preview before the official debut.
Why Project Overlord Could Be Significant for Hennessey
Project Overlord could represent another major evolution for Hennessey. Just as the Venom F5 marked a move away from a borrowed chassis architecture, the new hypercar may also signal a departure from the company’s 6.6-liter twin-turbo V8.
According to the report, Project Overlord will have a completely different appearance from the Venom F5, a notable change in the ultra-exclusive hypercar segment where buyers seek more than maximum horsepower. Distinctive engines and standout styling are increasingly important elements for vehicles competing at the highest level.
The report also notes that manufacturers including Bugatti, Pagani, and Koenigsegg have built strong reputations by expanding on their existing engineering and creating multiple distinctive hypercar models.
