Mercedes-AMG C43 has become a more compelling option on the used market after experiencing significant depreciation since its 2023 debut. While its switch from a six-cylinder to a four-cylinder engine divided enthusiasts, the performance sedan now offers modern technology, strong performance, and a lower entry price.

Mercedes-AMG C43 Sparked Debate With Engine Change

The 2023 Mercedes-AMG C43 generated mixed reactions when it replaced its previous six-cylinder engine with a turbocharged four-cylinder powertrain. The change marked a shift for AMG, a division long associated with high-performance six-, eight-, and even 12-cylinder engines.

Although the new engine improved outright performance, many enthusiasts criticized the loss of the six-cylinder character and distinctive AMG sound. The updated C43 also departed from AMG’s traditional hand-built engine approach, as its M139 engine is produced on a conventional production line.

High Launch Price Added to the Criticism

When it arrived in showrooms for the 2023 model year, the Mercedes-AMG C43 carried a price just under $60,000. The report notes that some buyers questioned paying that amount for a model powered by an engine also used in other Mercedes-Benz vehicles.

The same powerplant also appeared in a detuned form in the European-market A45 hot hatch, reinforcing concerns that the C43 no longer offered the unique character expected from an AMG model.

Reaction became even stronger after Mercedes confirmed the C63 AMG would also replace its V8 with the turbocharged 2.0-liter M139 engine, although the report notes that backlash recently led the company to partially reverse that decision.

Depreciation Has Changed the Value Proposition

The report argues that depreciation has made the Mercedes-AMG C43 a much more attractive purchase. According to The CarBuzz Marketplace, the average value of a used 2023 model has fallen to just under $45,000, representing a decline of about $15,000 in three years.

At that price, buyers can typically find examples with fewer than 25,000 miles, meaning many vehicles remain in near-new condition if they have been properly maintained.

The report also notes that the average used price sits comfortably below the average cost of a new vehicle in the United States, making the C43 more accessible to buyers with tighter budgets.

Performance Improved Despite the Smaller Engine

The latest Mercedes-AMG C43 is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four engine producing 402 horsepower, an increase of 17 horsepower over its predecessor’s twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6.

While the newer model produces 15 lb-ft less torque, an electric motor helps spin the turbocharger to reduce turbo lag while adding up to 17 horsepower at lower engine speeds.

The result is quicker acceleration. The previous V6-powered C43 reached 60 mph in 4.1 seconds, while the updated four-cylinder model completes the sprint in 3.9 seconds despite weighing more than 250 pounds.

Fuel economy also improves. The report states the four-cylinder model averages 23 mpg, two mpg better than the outgoing V6 version.

The C43 continues to offer adaptive damping and four-wheel steering, helping maintain the sharp handling expected from an AMG sports sedan.

Used C63 Offers an Alternative for V8 Enthusiasts

Buyers who prefer a traditional AMG experience can find a used W205-generation Mercedes-AMG C63 in a similar price range.

The report says a 2017 or 2018 C63 with fewer than 40,000 miles can be purchased for roughly the same $45,000 as a three-year-old C43. Powered by a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 producing 469 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque, the C63 delivers a more traditional AMG soundtrack and driving character.

Higher-mileage examples are also available for well under $40,000, according to the report.

A Different Kind of AMG Value

The Mercedes-AMG C43 remains a divisive model because of its transition to a four-cylinder engine, but its depreciation has significantly changed its appeal. With used prices around $45,000, the performance sedan combines faster acceleration, improved fuel economy, everyday practicality, and modern chassis technology, while buyers seeking a V8-powered alternative can find similarly priced used C63 models.
