BMW X5 buyers in China will soon have access to new long-wheelbase versions of the X5 and all-electric iX5, as the automaker expands its market-specific strategy with a stronger focus on rear-seat comfort. The models, which are scheduled to launch in 2027, feature a longer wheelbase, redesigned styling, and China-exclusive interior enhancements.
BMW Expands Long-Wheelbase Strategy for China
Automakers competing in global markets often adapt vehicles to regional customer preferences instead of relying on a single design for every market. In China, demand for spacious interiors has contributed to the popularity of luxury minivans such as the Toyota Alphard, while even the Tesla Model Y is offered in a long-wheelbase version with a three-row, six-seat layout that later became available in the United States.
BMW is now following a similar approach with long-wheelbase versions of the all-new X5 and iX5. According to the company, the models are designed specifically for China with an emphasis on improving rear-seat comfort. BMW executives have also said that further enhancing the X5’s off-road capabilities was not a priority.
Longer Wheelbase Brings More Passenger Space
Compared with the global BMW X5, the China-spec model receives a wheelbase extended by 130 mm (5.1 inches), increasing the total length between the axles to 3,165 mm (124.6 inches). That figure exceeds the wheelbase of the current BMW X7, although the flagship SUV could grow when its next-generation model arrives in 2027.
The stretched X5 also introduces a redesigned front end and comes equipped with adaptive two-axle air suspension as standard.
BMW says the longer wheelbase improves both passenger space and driving comfort while also contributing to a more stable driving experience.
China-Specific Interior Features
The cabin receives a China-exclusive design featuring what BMW describes as “streamlined surfaces and refined decorative elements.”
One of the standout features is the next generation of the BMW Theatre Screen, the large rear-passenger display first introduced in the 7 Series (G70). The display is intended to complement the larger interior and enhance the chauffeur-focused experience that many buyers in China seek.
BMW iX5 Range and Market Availability
The all-electric iX5 is rated at more than 1,000 km (621 miles) of driving range under the CLTC testing cycle. That is approximately 186 miles more than the preliminary EPA-estimated range of 435 miles for the U.S.-spec iX5.
BMW says the long-wheelbase X5 and iX5 are tailored exclusively for the Chinese market and are scheduled to launch there in 2027. Reports cited by BMWBLOG indicate the models could eventually reach India.
No Plans for a U.S. Launch
A U.S. launch appears unlikely. BMW has previously ruled out long-wheelbase models for North America because it expects demand to be low.
The China-market X5 is also built separately from the global model, which is produced at BMW’s Spartanburg, South Carolina, manufacturing plant alongside other SUVs, including the X3.
With the upcoming launch of the long-wheelbase X5 and iX5 in China, BMW is continuing its strategy of tailoring vehicles to regional market preferences while keeping these versions separate from its global lineup.
