Audi will eliminate the night shift at its Neckarsulm factory in November, transferring approximately 1,200 employees to daytime operations as the automaker works to improve productivity and reduce manufacturing costs. The move comes as parent company Volkswagen Group reviews its manufacturing network amid ongoing financial and market challenges.
Audi Restructures Neckarsulm Operations
The decision to end the night shift reflects Audi’s effort to align production capacity with changing demand in the luxury automotive market. Around 1,200 employees currently assigned to overnight operations will transition to standard daytime shifts.
The operational change comes as Volkswagen Group, led by CEO Oliver Blume, continues a broader cost-cutting initiative aimed at improving efficiency across its manufacturing network.
Financial Results Drive Manufacturing Changes
According to a Reuters report, Audi Group’s second-quarter revenue declined 12.5% to €15.0 billion. Operating profit also fell 3% to €533 million, resulting in a 3.6% profit margin, below the company’s fiscal-year target of 5% to 7%.
The company attributed the financial pressure to weaker market conditions in China and increased tariff headwinds in the United States.
Production Capacity Reduced at Neckarsulm
Neckarsulm’s annual production capacity has been reduced to 225,000 vehicles, approximately 75,000 units below its previous output.
As part of the restructuring, Audi is ending production of the A8 at the facility to consolidate production of A5 sedan and wagon variants in the site’s most modern assembly hall.
Future of the Plant Remains Unclear
The long-term outlook for the Neckarsulm factory has yet to be determined. The facility currently produces only combustion-engine vehicles and has no confirmed battery-electric vehicle production assignments after the current A5 and A6 model life cycles conclude.
The plant’s works council supported the shift changes in hopes of securing future electric vehicle platforms. However, Volkswagen Group has not yet finalized future production allocations, with decisions expected later this year.
Volkswagen Group Continues Broader Restructuring
The changes at Neckarsulm come as several German manufacturing facilities face restructuring while Volkswagen Group evaluates its production footprint in response to declining revenues.
Although workforce reductions are already underway, labor unions are expected to oppose broader job cuts. As Volkswagen Group continues its cost-reduction efforts, the elimination of the night shift at Neckarsulm represents one of the operational measures being implemented across the company.
The November transition to daytime-only production marks a significant operational change for Audi’s historic Neckarsulm factory as the automaker continues to adjust its manufacturing strategy in response to financial pressures and evolving market conditions.
