The Ferrari F80 Convertible has been spotted testing for the first time, offering an early look at what appears to be the open-top version of the brand’s flagship supercar. The prototype follows a series of Ferrari trademark filings that suggested both a track-focused FXX variant and a convertible model are in development.
Prototype Reveals an Open-Top Ferrari F80
The prototype was photographed by Instagram user Derek Cornelissan, who shared images of the test vehicle after spotting it near Maranello, Italy, where he regularly posts photos of development vehicles.
The most noticeable feature is an unusual section of bodywork covering the roof. Ferrari appears to have added the panel to conceal the final design of the convertible roof while testing.
Roof Design Appears to Leave the Rear Unchanged
The open-top section of the F80 appears relatively compact, consistent with other mid-engine sports cars and previous Ferrari flagship models.
The engine cover and the rest of the vehicle closely resemble the standard F80. Unlike some mid-engine convertibles that require visible design changes to accommodate a folding roof mechanism, the prototype shows few exterior modifications.
Based on those observations, Ferrari could use a manually removable Targa-style roof instead of a folding soft top.
Several Names Could Be Under Consideration
Ferrari has trademarked several names that could be used for the model, including F80 Targa and F80 Roadster.
Before those filings, the automaker also trademarked F80 Aperta, with “Aperta” meaning “open” in Italian. Ferrari previously used the Aperta name for its last flagship convertible featuring a removable roof, making it one possible choice for the upcoming model.
Powertrain Expected to Match the Coupe
The limited exterior changes suggest the convertible will retain the same specifications as the F80 coupe. That includes a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 paired with three electric motors producing a combined 1,184 horsepower.
The coupe accelerates from 0 to 62 mph in 2.15 seconds and reaches a top speed of 217 mph. The convertible is expected to be slightly heavier, which could make it marginally slower to 62 mph and result in a slightly lower top speed.
Reveal Expected Within About a Year
The prototype appears to be close to production, suggesting an official unveiling could take place in about a year.
The convertible is expected to be produced in limited numbers, similar to the coupe, and is likely to carry a price above the F80 coupe’s $3.23 million starting price.
