The BMW G74 Rugged SUV has reportedly failed to advance beyond its final approval stage, according to sources familiar with the program, raising questions about the future of BMW’s reported challenger to the Range Rover and Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon. The project has not been publicly confirmed by BMW.
Project Reportedly Evolved Over Several Years
According to sources, work on the reported Rugged SUV began at least three years ago as BMW engineers and executives evaluated competing vehicles. One model that reportedly made a strong impression internally was the Rivian R1T, helping inspire the idea of developing a more adventure-focused vehicle rather than adding an off-road package to the X5.
The first reported proposal was an all-electric SUV based on the Neue Klasse NA5 platform, which also underpins the new iX3. Because of the platform’s production locations, that version was expected to be built in Debrecen, Hungary, or San Luis Potosi, Mexico.
Sources said a full-scale design model was created for the electric version, although it remains unclear whether the project ever progressed to a functional prototype.
Project Shifted to CLAR Platform
As electric vehicle demand cooled, sources said BMW moved the Rugged project from the Neue Klasse NA5 platform to the CLAR architecture under the reported G74 codename. The CLAR platform is also expected to underpin the next-generation G65 X5.
The platform change reportedly shifted planned production to BMW’s Spartanburg, South Carolina, manufacturing plant. The CLAR architecture would also allow multiple powertrain options, including plug-in hybrid and fully electric versions.
According to the sources, the reported vehicle was also planned with features including a rear-mounted spare wheel, dedicated off-road hardware, a panoramic roof, and a three-row cabin with tailgate-style rear seating aimed at outdoor-focused buyers. The interior was expected to adopt the Neue Klasse design language scheduled to debut on the G65 X5.
Reported Business Concerns May Have Affected the Project
BMW has not publicly confirmed the Rugged program or commented on its reported status.
According to the sources, one reason the project may have stalled is concern that the luxury off-road SUV segment BMW intended to enter may not be large enough to justify the investment required for a dedicated model.
Sources also pointed to BMW’s recent strategy of reducing, rather than expanding, its product lineup. They cited previous models including the 5 Series GT, 6 Series GT, 3 Series GT, and 8 Series as examples of vehicles that occupied niche segments.
Future Decision Has Not Been Finalized
Sources noted that BMW has previously retained the ability to approve or cancel projects within approximately 18 months of their intended production dates.
The reported G74 Rugged SUV was originally targeted for a 2029 launch, leaving open the possibility that the project’s status could change if market conditions or competitive developments shift.
For now, according to sources familiar with the program, the version of the BMW G74 Rugged SUV developed over the past three years does not appear to be moving forward, although no official decision has been announced by the automaker.
