The new Mitsubishi Montero is moving closer to its global debut, and new reports suggest the revived SUV could eventually be offered with an electrified powertrain. The model will first debut in Japan as the Pajero before expanding to international markets, while signs also continue to point toward a future North American launch.
Montero Revival Moves Closer to Production
The reborn Mitsubishi Montero has already been previewed to select customers in Japan, and portions of its interior have also been revealed.
According to the report, dealers in the United States have already seen the finished vehicle. Although it may still take time before the SUV reaches showrooms, the outlook for a North American arrival is described as promising.
Diesel Expected, Hybrid Still Unconfirmed
Outside the United States, the Montero—known as the Pajero in many markets—has traditionally been offered with diesel engines. Aside from the Middle East and parts of Latin America, gasoline-powered versions have been less common, and some markets have not offered them at all.
The report states that a diesel engine alone would likely not be enough for a U.S. return and that a hybrid powertrain would better align with the current automotive market. Mitsubishi has not confirmed any powertrain details for the upcoming model.
Thai Government Release Mentions Electrified Pajero
Australian publication CarExpert reported that it found a press release from the Thai government stating that Mitsubishi is “studying the possibility of producing and exporting electric pickup trucks, including the Pajero, using Thailand as a production base.” The publication noted that the reference to “electric” may be the result of a translation error.
Separately, Nikkei Asia reported on Mitsubishi Motors Chairman and CEO Takao Kato’s courtesy visit with Thailand’s Prime Minister, Anutin Charnvirakul. According to the report, Mitsubishi plans to invest $470 million in its facilities in Thailand for the production of electrified vehicles.
The Pajero was also mentioned in that report, adding to indications that a hybrid-powered version of the SUV could be under consideration.
Potential Benefits for Global Markets
If introduced, an electrified Pajero or Montero could broaden the SUV’s appeal in markets where diesel-powered vehicles are becoming less common, while also supporting its potential return to North America.
The report identifies the plug-in hybrid system used in the Outlander PHEV as the most likely candidate if Mitsubishi introduces a hybrid version of the Montero. It also notes that the company already has the technology available, making it a cost-effective option. Mitsubishi has not confirmed any future hybrid powertrain for the Montero or Pajero.
For now, the upcoming world premiere of the revived Mitsubishi Montero remains the next major milestone as the company prepares to reintroduce one of its best-known SUVs to global markets.
