BYD has entered Japan’s highly competitive kei car market with the launch of the BYD Racco, the first non-Japanese kei car introduced in the country. Developed specifically for the Japanese market, the all-electric model combines a lower starting price with the longest driving range among electric kei cars as the automaker pursues annual sales of 10,000 units.
BYD Launches Its First Passenger Vehicle Designed for One Overseas Market
The BYD Racco is the company’s first passenger vehicle created specifically for a single overseas market. The all-electric kei car starts at 2.15 million Japanese yen, or about $13,000.
That pricing makes it approximately $2,000 less expensive than electric kei car competitors including the Nissan Sakura and Mitsubishi eK X EV, which share the same platform. Honda’s N-One e: is priced roughly $3,500 higher than the BYD Racco.
However, while many Japanese competitors receive larger government subsidies, BYD qualifies for the lowest subsidy in the segment. The Racco receives 150,000 yen in subsidies, compared with 580,000 yen for Honda, Mitsubishi, and Nissan models.
The BYD Racco is priced above Toyota’s two-seat C+ pod, which starts at around $11,000. However, the C+ pod is nearly one meter shorter than the kei car category’s maximum vehicle length of 3.4 meters (133.8 inches), and Toyota does not currently offer a direct competitor to the Racco.
Longest Driving Range in the Electric Kei Car Segment
BYD says the Racco delivers up to 199 miles of driving range from a 35.84-kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, giving it the longest range among electric kei cars.
The closest competitor is the Honda N-One e:, which offers a driving range of 183 miles.
Standard Technology and Sales Goals
The BYD Racco comes standard with advanced driver-assistance systems across all trim levels, sliding rear doors, and a tall cabin. The vehicle stands 70.8 inches high.
BYD also says the Racco is the kei car segment’s first software-defined vehicle (SDV).
“We want to deliver unprecedented convenience and enjoyment to all people across Japan through our technology,” BYD Japan President Liu Xueliang said during the vehicle’s launch event in Tokyo, according to The Straits Times.
The automaker is targeting customers in cities and towns with populations below 500,000 and currently has 77 sales locations across Japan.
BYD Eyes Growth in Japan and Global Markets
Kei cars account for about 40% of Japan’s new vehicle sales, thanks to their affordability and compact size that suits the country’s narrow roads.
BYD is targeting annual sales of 10,000 Racco electric vehicles in a market segment that has traditionally been dominated by Japanese automakers including Honda, Suzuki, Nissan, and Toyota.
At the same time, the company continues expanding across Europe, South America, and other global markets. Last year, BYD—short for “Build Your Dreams”—overtook Tesla as the world’s largest seller of pure electric vehicles.
The launch of the BYD Racco marks another step in the automaker’s broader global expansion strategy while establishing its presence in Japan’s kei car segment.
